Check Engine on Taurus 1994

My car Ford Taurus 1994 had the Check Engine light on the dashboard glow. This was the first time it was glowing and in a 5 Km drive it came on just 2 times.
Can someone give me some indications as to what I could check.
I looked at the Enigne oil and it looked clean and also it was to the full amount. The Coolant is also full.
Thanks
Harold

Re: Check Engine on Taurus 1994

The check engine light will indicate that the car's computer (PCM or ECM) has detected an out-of-expected-parameter condition. This will not be due to a low fluid level. On the 1994 you should be able to jumper the EEC connector under the hood to have the Check Engine Light (CEL) flash out the diagnostic codes. There are numerous sites on the Internet that can explain the procedure. Or, in the US anyway, most chain auto parts stores will read out these codes at no charge. If you catch them on the right day, they may even tell you the exact code number.

You can post the code on this thread and we may be able to give you some guidance on where to check next.

If you have trouble finding the procedure to pull the code yourself, post back and we can list it for you. I think the procedure is pretty universal and not dependent upon where you live (since you list the distance in km I'm guessing you're not in the US).

Did the car run any differently when the light was on or just before it came on?

Re: Check Engine on Taurus 1994

I am clueless as to how to check. If you could let me know how to do it this will be great. I live in Canada.
This may be of some use, During the peak of cold season when i back my car after a long stay the battery light used to come on. But within a few minutes it goes away. And once the car warms up when i back the car, the battery light never comes on. Is this useful tip for diagnosing the problem.

Thanks
Harold

You may find the procedure outlined at the following site useful:

As for the battery light, that probably means you have a weak alternator that is not charging sufficiently when the engine is cold.
