Distributor Problem

I'm a newbie at this, so please excuse the long post. I have 1998 Cherokee with a 4.0. The original problem was that it stop running without any warning. After replacing the coil and CPS du to no fire. I found that the rotor button was not turning. I removed the distributor to find that the gears were severally worn to the point it had a "dead" spot on it. I was wondering if anyone has ever come across this or might have a possible cause. The cam gear looks ok (no severe wear) from what I can see looking through the hole.

Re: Distributor Problem

How many miles on the jeep and have you ever done a major tune up to it before?

Re: Distributor Problem

It has about 109 k miles. No major tune up has been done. I took the distributor by a local mechanic and he said that was not an uncommon thing to happen. Just seems really odd for that gear to strip out like it did. Probably doesn't help that the primary driver is my 19 year old son.
