95 sl sohc with oil problem
I have a 1995 saturn sl with a growin oil problem. We are loosing 1 quart for every 300-400 miles. The car is not only burning oil its loosing it somewhere also, Im not quite sure where its coming from. I want to say the oil pan, but the whole bottom of the car is covered in an oil film. The car burns the most oil when it first starts up and when ever you shift from 1st to second gear. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you need any other information.

Re: 95 sl sohc with oil problem
well the main cause is leaking it past the piston rings, which you normally can never tell thats its happening. the other cause is valve stem seals leaking, which usually happens on the exhaust side. i think the oil normally smokes (out of exhaust) white when it seeps past the valve seals.
other then those, you are going to have to wash the motor off and find where its leaking. a leak can come from anywhere making it seem like the issue is elsewhere.

Re: 95 sl sohc with oil problem
Well the exhaust is blowing out white smoke. Just from experience which would be better/cheaper to have wrong the piston rings or the valve stems?

Re: 95 sl sohc with oil problem
uh, kind of hard to say. depends on if your going to do the work. either way the head comes off (i dont like doing valve seals with head on car), from there you either tear the head completely apart (valve seals) or tear the pan off and remove the rod caps and forces the pistons out of the top of the engine. i dont advise doing what i call a "cheap rebuild" because the block should be removed to have everything spec'd and resurfaced/honed.
i have done a cheap rebuild just because my friend needed his car quick, and i did a quick hone on the cylinders, check deck for flatness, and put it altogether. also, make sure your not losing coolant. the sohc engines are proned to cracking and burning coolant. just check your spark plugs and see what they look like.

Re: 95 sl sohc with oil problem
Saturnspeed, just my 2 cents, but could this be one of those "sticking rings" I've read about? Would that be worth a try?

Re: 95 sl sohc with oil problem
yes it could be, but he said it wasnt burning it, so i came up with other options. but i also told him to check the plugs to figure this out.
now if you want to before really digging in, you can do a piston soak. ill try and find my post on it again, and im thinking about sticking it in my sig, so i wont have to keep looking for it
