is this illegal?

Hypothetically speaking, two friends go into a dealership at 9:00 pm when the shop closes at 8:00pm. they do not go inside the actuall building but look at the cars to not be hassled by salespeople... is this legal to do?

Re: is this illegal?

Should be as long as there's no gates or anything and you don't break anything. I've waited for people in dealership parking lots before and never got shit for it.

Re: is this illegal?

Not illegal.

Can't testdrive right??
You aren't damaging cars. You are fine to check out cars when the dealer is closed.

Re: is this illegal?

i hd a cop give me shit for it once. he pulled me over right after i left the lot. he said people had been breaking into cars there and he just stopped me and wanted to know what was up. i didn't get in any trouble for it but he told me i should go during the hours that they were open.

Re: is this illegal?

^^Not as long as you dont go over a gate or any other type of boundry or sign that says something to the matter of staying out after business hours. Its a public business and your staying outside the building so everything should be OK.

Re: is this illegal?

ok say there's one of those swing gates... with a lock but there's a gap on the right and left hand side (to prevent people from driving off with the car)
all hypothetically of course

Re: is this illegal?

Those gates are mostly there just to keep people from jacking cars. Its not illegal, but if you feel uncomfortable going at night, most dealerships are closed on Sunday, so go then durring the day.

Re: is this illegal?

I would say if its meant to keep the cars from leaving and there is no sign I'd still say its ok if there is a clear gap that you could walk through.

Re: is this illegal?

I've done that a few times... I don't think it's illegal really.

Just don't make it seem like you're 'scoping' out the cars for boostin em. If possible, keep yourself out where people can see you... like if security or police drove by.

Don't be a tool and try to hide behind a car, cause then you're pretty much hosed.

Re: is this illegal?

Even if someone stops your not going to get in trouble unless as previously mentioned you go in when it says not to. They'll just ask you a few questions and then move on or ask you to come back later.

Re: is this illegal?

if all entrences have gates its tresspassing because its showing they want noone entering the lot

chances youll get in troubble-slim

but if so much as one gate is left open it cant be tresspassing unless there are posted hours saying to not be on the lot after a certain time.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/di...file=552-555.5

ok, so yeah they need signs and closed gates.

Re: is this illegal?

thanks that link is awesome...

well the reason why i asked this is while hypothetically we were at the dealership (honda) looking at the s2k and the hybrid accord, some idiot was at the acura dealership setting off an alarm on a rsx. security saw us but didn't say anything but then the alarm went off, and the dude (who was driving a 300zx) was doing his damndst to turn off the alarm... wasn't sure if he was just looking or was thinking about taking it for a unscheduled test drive. i just didn't want to get into trouble... no record... looking to keep that.
