Exclamation 86 Silverado won't turn over- please help!

Hi,

I have an 86 Silverado that won't turn over. At first it was the battery (got the "click"), then I charged it and it seems to be holding a charge- (lights work and everything), but the engine won't turn over. Someone suggested checking the fuse box. (if thats the case, how do I go about checking the fuses?) Any other ideas?

Thanks

There are really no fuses to check for this.
First things to check are the battery connections. This is a common problem, and one that is very often overlooked. If your cables are original, then you likely have the style of connector that has the flat washer like end on the cables (at the battery), and that has a flange type bolt - all encircled by a rubber cover. Disconnect both cables from the battery, wrench the covers off of them, and wire brush the cable ends and the bolts. Chances are you will find corrosion on them (green & crusty). Use some dielectric grease when reassembling. Next, make sure that the other end of the Negative cable is clean and making good contact. Last, with the Positive cable still disconnected from the battery, disconnect its other end from the starter solenoid. Wire brush as necessary, then reassemble with a dab of dielectric grease. Reconnect everything, and give it a try.
If that still gets a "CLICK", you should be looking to replace the starter (solenoid may have gone bad). Also, have the battery "LOAD" tested - local mechanic, AUTOZone or Sears Auto Center can do this. It will tell you if the battery has life left in it or not.
