Exclamation 04 GTI 1.8T braking on its own while driving/ parked!!

My '04 1.8T is being verrrrry strange. While driving long distances (from SF to Sacramento, for instance) the car will depress the brakes by itself (I can tell because it slows down, particularly noticable in cruise control, and the reflection of the brake light shows in my rear window). I have even come outside to find my PARKED CAR with the brake lights ON! I have to pump the brake pedal to turn them off. I don't know whether to laugh, or cry for all eternity.
I assume it's still under warranty. Is this something serious, freak, familiar, whhhatttttt???

it's in the shop right now. isn't something more than just the brake light, because the vehicle actually slows down on its own.
