Re: 99 Cherokee Sport - Driver Side Seat Belt

When mine did that, it was a broken part in the buckle. The Jeep dealer had one in stock and it was easy to take out the old one and put in the new.

It's been awhile but it seems like it was around $30. You get the complete section of seat belt from the floor up including the buckle. I suppose you could save a buck or two by going to the salvage yard instead of the dealer.

You said it's pretty easy to replace? How about for a novice?

Re: 99 Cherokee Sport - Driver Side Seat Belt

Easy fix. Slide seat all the way forward. Remove mounting bolt (torex, you can get a torex socket set fairly inexpensively if you do not already have one or just buy the one that fits this bolt). Bolt new seat belt end into place and you are done. Show wife what a good job you did fixing her Jeep and take all the credit.

My local parts supplier told me it was a dealer only part so I got it from Jeep. You can call your parts store and see.

first up - thanks. second, the belt goes into the "skin" of the interior. It appears i would have to remove the interior skin "moluding" to insert the new belt. Does this make sense to you? thanks for replying.

Re: 99 Cherokee Sport - Driver Side Seat Belt

On my 95 the buckle is on the right side of the driver's seat and is bolted to the hump down near the floor to the right rear of the seat. When the seat is slid all the way forward, it is easy to see and get to. You should not have to replace the other half of the belt, just the buckle end which is about 12" to 18" long. There is a plastic cover which is part of the buckle half of the seat belt but it comes with the new one. There is a plastic plug which pops off that covers the mounting bolt. Did they change the design of the seat belts between 95 and 99?

I am not a jeep expert, but the seatbelt is instide the wall of the cabon. I would have to get inside the inner skin of the cabin to access the belt mechanism. Well to make a long story short, since this is a saftey issue, i had my buddy order the part from a dealer (he's a mechanic) and he's gonna do it. The part cost me 77 bucks, i'll probably throw him a 20 and a case of beer. thanks for your help.

You seem to be knowledgible in jeeps, i have another question, i will post it in another thread.

Re: 99 Cherokee Sport - Driver Side Seat Belt

The part you are talking about replacing is very easy to replace. First start by removing the kick panel by your feet and then remove the plastic piece at the bottom of door frame, then remove the plastic piece that covers the a arm that runs from the dash to the roof, then remove the plastic piece that covers the column between the doors and that will give you access to where the belt mechanism is. At the floor it is held in place by a torx bolt and there is probably a torx bolt that holds the beld retractor inplace, and another torx bolt that hold the piece in at the top of the column that the belt slide through to position it over your shoulder. After removing the three bolts then just work the belt through the hole in the plastic piece to seperate the two and then install the new one in the reverse order of the way you took it out. Very simple to do as all the plastic pieces are held inplace by phillips head screws and slide together. If he's your buddy then just buy him a case of beer no need for the 20 as it would only take about a half hour.
