newbie- question re: bomz short ram

I have a 98 1.6 base model sentra, I read the sticky post, good stuff, very helpful. I just bought a Bomz short ram intake, and I can make it fit... mostly. Anyone done this? The hose fittings seem off, but I can fix that. I'm wondering about the sensor that fits in just back of the airbox, tho. Any suggestions/ words of wisdom? TIA

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

Are you talking about the MAF? or the smaller sensor inside the airbox?

If it's the MAF, it's should be directly in the tubing behind the filter.

The smaller sensor....eggh, I hate that thing. Just try to stick it into the filter somehow. It needs a bit of air or something. Not too sure, but it's a little pain in the ass sensor.

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

Thanks fugiot.
That's right, it's the MAF. So what I was wondering is where should it go w/ the new piping? Pretty much the system is just an s-pipe made of aluminum, some hose (wrong size for application), a square mount & boot for the filter, some brackets and a boot for the throttle body, nowhere to put the MAF. Should I retain that section of the old to keep the MAF in place?

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

if the 's' metal piping fits from your throttle body to where the air filter should go, im sure you could drill out a hole the size needed to put the MAF sensor in it.....

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

Thanks Chiquae07, it looks like I can use the entire MAF body in between the s-pipe and the filter - it might have even been designed that way. Great forum here, I'm sure I'll be back when I do the suspension.

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

Yeah, I was about to say, the entire MAF assembly connects to the rear of the filter and then the tubing connects to the rear of the MAF assembly.

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

Thanks for the advice, the system is in. It was a less than straightforward install, had to buy a step-down boot at Home Depot to make it work, and the backing plate did not fit onto the MAF unit without modification. The sound is good, when you open the throttle wide, other wise no noticable difference. Same with performance, you feel it up top, but nothing at low revs. Thanks again.

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

sorry im late but it sounds like the sensor your talking about is the air intake temp sensor. a little two prong thing that plugs into the airbox or the tube coming from the bumper to the box. i have always kept that plugged in and just left it taped or tied to something. seems to work fine. too bad intakes dont come with a provision for that, it seems like it would be a no duh thing to just add a connection to the end of the filter or something.

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

Yeah, I've heard the best use for the temp sensor is to punch a teeny hole in the filter itself and let it get some of the air. Or if you have an HKS filter, just push it thru the filter meshing.

Re: newbie- question re: bomz short ram

I left the sensor that fits into the old intake tube alone - left the tube in there as well, w/o the airbox. I'm getting a "juicebox" that's supposed to fit onto the air sensor clip - should be in very soon, but I'll be out of commision for awhile (back surgery). Talk to you all later
