I find myself in somewhat of a perdicament...
So as I getting ready to leave my house for Navy basic training today, my recruiter is talking about all the great places in the world I will get to go. He tells me that their is a good chance I will be stationed in Japan because of my job, which just so happens to be dream come true for me. So as thoughts of racing an R32 Skyline on C1 are running through my head, a thought hits me like a ton of bricks, if I buy a Skyline I can't bring it home. So I've been racking my brain trying to think of every dirty trick I can think of to get the car stateside but I'm drawing a blank. So I'm wondering would it be worth it to buy one and try to sneak it back in, or would something that is actually legal in the US be better like a 3rd Gen RX-7? As much as I would love to have a Skyline I don't want to have to leave it in Japan when I leave. Take your time with your replies I won't be able to read them for at least 2 months as I understand Automotive Forums is not an approved site for Navy Boot.

Definitely take the tour in Japan! Beg and plead if you have to just to get to Japan! Its an awsome place!
Once you settle in, buy a skyline and enjoy driving it. Maybe by the time you rotate someone will be able to import them again. If not, sell it and buy one of the other great cars out there. Life is too short to drive just one car! If you need advice on getting a car in Japan send me a pm. -AL Nothing like a track day at Fuji raceway: ![]()

Re: I find myself in somewhat of a perdicament...
u can kit it back into the states, take it apart, ship it in, and the rebuild it, and register it as a kit car. it still has to pass inspection(only the emmisions, and saftey belts) that should work. by breaking it apart, and shipping i mean, different pieces in different containers. or u could do wat was said above, leave, come home, then move back, japan is an awsome place i was there, and saw so many skyline's i started to become more aprreciative to them.
u could also try, staying in japan the entire time ur in the navy(unless u a lifer) that way when u get bonuses, u can save em up for a house, then buy the gtr in a few yrs. |

Yeah, I'd say try your best to get there, and don't worry about it until the time comes.
Don't get your hopes up that you'll go there just yet. Recruiters are infamous for telling people basically whatever they want to hear just to get you to sign the papers. I'll be in Okinawa in June, I'll be there a minimum of 4 years, then maybe on to Germany or maybe back to Italy or something, or maybe mainland Japan. Best of luck getting there! From what I've heard what vectorspecialist said WILL work, but it's a bit of a headache. |
