Trouble Code #14
Ok,
I have had enough. So I've got a 91 S10 4.3, 4X4, and it's been having a hard time starting when it's cold. I did a diagnostic on it and pulled a GM Trouble Code #14, so I replaced the coolant temp. sensor. A couple of days later it wouldn't start at all. I checked everything, and the fuel pump was not turning on. It was getting power. So I replaced the fuel pump, strainer, and filter. Now I've got it started and running again, but I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running or it will stall out. Then after it warms up it stalls out while driving. Usually when slowing down to go around corners, or taking off at a stop light. I'm pretty sure it's still the coolant temp. sensor. It seems like it's lean when it's cold and rich while it's warm causing it to stall by flooding out. I put it in the shop. They told me I needed a computer that there was no 5 volt ref. coming from the computer. So I replace the computer. Guess what still same problem. I checked the coolant temp sensor connector, and no 5 volt ref. I also checked the wiring harness that plugs into the computer I think it's pin# 12? No ref. volts their either. I did a tune up "cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil, filter, pcv, air filter. Knowing it's not going to hurt, and this truck, has almost 200K, and this is the first real major problems. I've almost given up, I hate to put it back, in the shop, not like the know whats going on either. So anyone have any other ideas? |

Re: Trouble Code #14
having a fault light on doesnt really mean the sensor is bad. and replacing a sensor wont always cure the problem. if youre not getting volts to it trace the wiring, and look for bare wiring and loose connections.

Re: Trouble Code #14
where did your new computer come from? a yard? a parts store such as advanced or napa? or right from gm? (the only place something like that should come from) and as jackass said, just because theres no 5v ref. doesnt mean its the sencer, you must physically peal the harness and follow the wire back to the computer from the sencer

Re: Trouble Code #14
OK so, I did some more checking, at the computer and their was no 5v ref. "at the actual computer plug", So me and my father-in-law, did some rewiring, and fix the problem, by bypassing the original circuit, and grounding the ciruit directly to the battery, and running a new yellow wire to computer.
you know and I took it a shop that I "trusted", and they sent me through this wild goose hunt. I don't think I can really blame them either...... FYI: If a wire is shorted out "grounded", then the computer will default out, and shut the power off. Having NO ref. volts, through the entire connection. |
