Question Head Rebuild Questions

I finally got my new head in today (thanks Travis). Well, not new new, but the one I'm going to rebuild. I have a couple of questions now.

How can I clean it. I want every single little piece of that thing cleaned. I figured water is not good. Some kind of chemical bath? Soap and water?

Valves: I'm seeing standard size valves and oversized (1mm) valves. What do they mean by 1mm? I want to get the head port/polished, so would the 1mm be needed then or what?

Thanks!

Re: Head Rebuild Questions

The 1mm valves are if the valve seats get reground to a larger 1mm over stock. For just a basic port and polish you shouldn't need them because that is only going to effect your intake and exhaust ports. You should be able to use a carb and choke cleaner and some tooth or small wire brushes to clean the head up.
Hope that helps.

EDIT----> If you can afford it(I wouldn't think that it would cost much) you should have your intake and exhaust manifolds port matched to your head.

Re: Head Rebuild Questions

I was going to port those out too. There's alot of downtime involved and I can't have that. I still got alot of time before this thing goes on anyways.

This thing is a mess... I need a lot of that stuff then. I mean it needs to soak good. lol.

So for just a basic port job, standard size is all I'm oging to need. I haven't had time to take aprt everything and see how the current valves are. I may just get OEMs and some better springs then. Anything else I should know?

Re: Head Rebuild Questions

^ For cleaning I use simming pool acid and a big ass garbage can for small engines and heads. Just be careful and don't get it in your eyes. Getting your parts tanked at the machine shop is not at all expensive though. I think it was $15 to do my small block chevy last time. Soap and water are OK too (just harder), just make sure it is absolutly dry after, and spray some WD 40 or similar on it.
