97 Blazer goes click, click, click when I start it.

When I star my truck the engine has a repetitive clicking sound. after about 5 minutes it goes away...
The clicking is faster and slower with the RPMs
Thanks
Jim

Yes, a noisy lifter. What oil and filter are you using? How long has it been doing this?

I believe he means that the Blazer does actually start up, but has a "tapping" sound that goes along with the RPM's.

Sounds like a lifter to me. Are you by chance using a Fram oil filter?

I HATE the Fram brand name and anything with Fram on it....Cheap!!! I had a 99 Blazer that wouldn't accept fram oil filters. It liked those K&N filters, though...

Just got the truck today, not sure what filter is on. Is a lifter something problem that can be correct without tearing into the engine...?

First, pull the dipstick and smell the oil. Does it smell like fuel?

Re: 97 Blazer goes click, click, click when I start it.

Well there are a couple things you can try.

1. Make sure its got a good filter with a quality anti-drain back valve. This valve inside the filter will prevent the oil from draining from the top of your motor, where the lifters are, after the engine is shut off, resulting in better cold start oil flow. I perfer WIX or Napa Gold filters and have had execelent results with them.

2. Switch to synthetic or a better quality oil, this will sometimes make noisy lifters all quiet again.

3. Use one of the chemical engine flush products that clean the inside of the engine. Sludge and debris are one of the main causes of noisy lifters.

Re: 97 Blazer goes click, click, click when I start it.

The High Mileage oil helps clean the engine, free sticky lifters, and also helps the seals - but how is the coolant level - this is one of those leaking intake gasket warnings as the Dex Cool sprays into the valley on the lifters so fill the overflow reservior and watch it - get a light and carefully look at the front corners of the intake and between the intake and valve covers for leaks/fluids. If you are near 100k it is due to happen and do not wait to fix it. When I did 2 of mine both showed orange Dex Cool in the valley.

Oil filter or even a noisy fuel injector.

Can you record this sound?

Also, check what oil filter you have an let us know.

Re: 97 Blazer goes click, click, click when I start it.

I changed the oil and filter and added some kind of thick 2 part goop for fixing noises and leaks and now it happens when I stard the truck and almost immediately stops....I'm gonna wait a few hours and let the engine get cold and start it and see how long it takes for the clicking to go away

Oh gawd, out of the pot and right into the fire.

Why the hell did you add that junk to your oil. Now you have completely counteracted doing the oil change seeing you now made the oil thicker and harder to flow on startup.

Don't add stuff to your oil unless you have doen your research on it.
