Post New topspeed record.... (56kw)

Quote:

AMS chief editor Bernd Ostmann has been the first mag tester that had the pleasure to ride 400+ in the EB 16.4 Bugatti Veyron at VW test course Ehra-Lessien...

For the metric challenged
402 kph is 249.9 mph
100 kph is 62mph
200 kph is 124mph
25 meters is 82 feet
1950 kg is 4299 lbs!
some impressions what he said about that day...

the track has been kinda damp in the morning, kinda scary at 400km/h, so 111m/sec without crash barries like in Nardo, well not really, rear wing setup to 2° so 40 to 50kg downforce at rear axle engineers promise that this´ll be enough for a smooth ride even on wet pavement...
through the first corner with 220 easily - absolute brutal accelerating up to 300 within seconds a light left hand bend with 380 - looking into the rear mirror - just an enormous spray but just like they told the EB16.4 is a very smooth car to ride even at that speeds...
the sepcial Michelin tires are working just perfect, they were tested up to 500km/h and before a high speed run they require 3bar pressure - this is one of the points the driver has to go through with a check list and a second car key to unlock the high speed mode - here the two front diffusor flaps are closed, the rear wing selects 2° and the body is lowered to 6.5cm front and 7cm rear a sepecial system is monitoring everything and when only one parameter is not ok the car automatically switches to handling-mode...
the first run ended with "only" 380km/h - the car switched to handling because the exhaust temperatures reached critical 970°C - cooling down the car at 220 or 5000rpm in 4th gear...
the weather gets better, it´s much warmer now and engineers force the AMS team to "act" - next run 398km/h - this time it´s the driver´s fault as he has enabled the A/C on the previous cooling lap costing some km/h on that fast run - so again a cooling lap and then full concentration on the last run with nearly 400 the rpm showed 5800 in 7th gear, now it shows 6200rpm at a speed of 402km/h ...

braking is again a new experience 31.4m (!!!) from 100 to 0 with a 1950kg car...

on the other hand acceleration is also outstanding - measured 25m long black rubber from all four wheels after the standard sprint with launch-control - result: 2.5sec to 100 and 7.3 to 200

on a side note - at 400 km/h the EB16.4 needs ONE liter fuel for ONE kilometer so they calculated every 12min a gas station on autobahn when driving 400

With that kind of fuel consumption, gas prices really need to go down!

The January 2006 issue of Sports Car International says that the Veyron's engine weighs 882 pounds.

Re: New topspeed record.... (56kw)

I've seen the car on top gear and I have to say it is a way beyond incredible machine. On top gear the've claimed it to be way quicker then for example a Mclaren F1. They say it is so quick when you put both cars on a drag strip the Veyron doesn't even need to accelerate till the F1 reaches 100MPH. Once the F1 is long gone and reaches that speed the Buggatti can floor it and overtake the F1 when it reaches 200MPH. If it's true it's just insane, this thing is for fighter pilots.

I never thought they would be able to solve al their problems. I've seen the car once in reality in a showroom in Germany. At the time it was still a concept car, but once you've seen it you realize how hard it must be to make it work. To tell you the truth, it is not really big I think Bugatti made one huge mistake and the engineers know it. They designed the car thirst with car designers and unfortunatly most car designers don't have a clue about engineering problems. In fact the designers created huge problems with their design which the engineers had to solve afterwerds. I just can't believe they ectually pulled it of. I give one example the engine is huge, but where is the huge air intake for the radiator???? How can they possibly cool an 800 lbs high performance engine? Jeremy also mentioned the gearbox, this thing produces much more hp and torque then a Formula1 engine. These guys find it hard to build a gearbox which need to survive for 500 mile. How about that thing in the Bugatti.

I can say only one thing:

Job well done

for 1.5 million dollars, the damned gearbox better last more than 500miles. I wonder if audi is acuatlly making money of of this car. I mean so much r&d went into it, I wonder if they are even going to break even.

Actually it has been VW who has put the money into the car under Audi's name and no they wont make any money back from 4-6 years of development of this car is only to get Bugatti name back into the super car market. I don’t know about tranny service in only 500 miles. I think it will last more like 5000 or so depending on the driving. There was a Mercedes race car made into a street car that had to have service every 1000 miles and that car was a cool one mill. But if so this is good news for me for the ultimate rally that I will be racing in this august for there are two Veyron’s entered in the race so if there out I can actually have a change to win the 2 mill.

Re: New topspeed record.... (56kw)

Well in that case good luck, but you have a chance though. Like already mentioned the Buggati needs to refuel several times a day to say the least.

A couple of sites mention that it reached 257 in the Utah desert but without many details.

A detailed article in supercars.net has many pictures from that run but doesn't actually say what was the speed recorded there!
