Nissan Xanavi 350Z

An out of the box build. I used this as one of my subjects in the decal application demos I did at the last TamiyaCon. Been working on it finishing in my free time ever since. Great fitting kit. Decals fit really well too and match the Tamiya lacquers dead on... - Mark

Re: Nissan Xanavi 350Z

That's a very clean well built model and it looks great. Did you clear coat the decals? I can't tell from the pics. It's also good to see you posting in the motorsport section. Doesn't happen enough.

Thanks, yes it is clear coated. I also sanded out the clear to remove the decal "ghost" edges... - Mark

Re: Nissan Xanavi 350Z

Can you just clarify how you painted the body? Primer, basecoat, topcoat
? Also did you spray the red on the a silver base coat or red masked silver, because i have this kit and want the colors to be dead on. BTW, cam out super clean. Need more oobs from you.

Re: Nissan Xanavi 350Z

Looks every bit as good as we expect from you Mark i.e. flawless.
Tamiya are good the way they match their decals to their paint, I guess it's good for business.

Re: Nissan Xanavi 350Z

Thanks everyone.
I used the paint colors called out in the instructions, after all, this was for a demonstration at Tamiya, it should reflect a stock kit. TS-8 Italian Red and TS-76 Mica Silver.
Body is molded white. I masked off what was to be red and sprayed the silver from the can. A couple hours later, (it was a bit of a rush job to get it ready), I masked off the silver and sprayed the red. It is an easy mask job and well illustrated in the instructions. About as close to a no-brainer as you can get.

DO NOT paint the entire car silver, then just mask off for the red!

It will make the red too dark and not match the decal exactly. The red has to go over white, not silver. Follow what I did and the decals will match dead on.
If you can't find the Mica Silver, TS-17 Gloss Aluminum is extremely close, I used it on an earlier one and the silver decals matched great. The Mica Silver is a bit more forgiving, but really needs a gloss coat to shine.

The decals were applied to the paint, no clear between the colors and decals. After I applied the decals, (many of them during the live demonstration), I airbrushed a two part automotive urethane clear over the body. Sanded out the decal edges with Tamiya sandpapers and polished it with the three Tamiya compounds. (That was another demo on a Skyline body too.)

It does photograph brighter in the direct sun than it looks in person... - Mark

Re: Nissan Xanavi 350Z

This has to have happened to other builders.
I was cleaning up my shop yesterday and found the windshield banner decal on the sheet with the leftovers for the PitWork version. Never missed it on the car, I think I was too busy concentrating on the body decals. Now it's really done. Unless I find something else... - Mark
