'99 windstar o/d flashing and tranny not shifting right.

I was coming home last night and the rpm's were up to 3-4 the whole way home. It felt like it want to stall and when I got almost home (2 hours later) the O/D light started flashing. So when I got home and put it in park it started making a noise and shacking. I am a woman and need some real help with this van.

can anyone give me some advice to this problem?

Re: '99 windstar o/d flashing and tranny not shifting right.

I had the same problem a few days ago. It wouldn't hurt to take it by auto zone or advanced auto parts and have them read the code for free. If it says the gear ratios are wrong then check the transmission range sensor (aka neutral safety switch) on top of the transmission. That's a $40 or less fix. Read the post "'96 windstar tranny leak" that was recently posted. That was my husband. We have gotten some helpful replies on it. It will tell you how to do a diagnostic to see if it is the sensor going bad. It's a common problem with transmissions. They get moisture in there and start malfunctioning to where the tranny isn't sure where to shift. Let me know what you find out.

Have you checked the transmission range sensor? (neutral safety switch). Also you need to have the codes read from the blinking O/D light. It definetly sounds like an electrical/sensor problem. Easy fix if you do the diagnostic in the post I told you about. Good luck!

Re: '99 windstar o/d flashing and tranny not shifting right.

When the OD light flashes this is like the transmission trouble light. does your spedometer work......If not I say that your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) has gone bad....this code will not show up with the autozone scanners. A bad VSS will cause up shifting and down shifting problems, simply because the vehicle does not know how fast it is going....this is a $200 - $250 fix at the dealer.......rather difficult to do yourself. Good Luck

Re: '99 windstar o/d flashing and tranny not shifting right.

Same exact symptoms, after reading tons of posts on the net, decided to give changing out the TRS a shot... it LOOKS like the new one is lined up exactly the same as the old one... but the problem remains. Can shift 1,2,N,P,R, but will NOT shift to 3rd or higher. In fact, in 2nd gear, the RPM's just rev up... like having the car in neutral almost (it does disengage the transmission sometimes when I do this...)

(note, spedometer and odometer work fine)
