Bent Valve?
I'm looking at this ad for a car and it says it "may have a bent valve, but still runs good". Is there a way to tell if its a bent valve for sure? Someone else said it won't "run good" like he said. I'm wondering if it could be a bent valve or the guy doesn't know what he's talking about and just guessed. Also, about how much would it cost to get it fixed? I'm just looking for a rough ballpark estimate. Its a D16 engine, so if its more than $450, I'll just get a new one :finger:

a new valve is easy to replace, not a hard job at all to do yourself, shouldnt cost too much for a new set of valves either, as im unsure if you can buy just one.
anyway, the car would be running like shit if the valve was messed up, it would either be letting too much air/fuel in or sucking too much gas out, depending on the valve. you will also hear a loud ticking noise where the valve would be hitting the walls of the cylinder. However if you do have a bent valve that means you prolly have other parts messed up as well, could have a damaged piston, detonation problems, rocker arm problems, valve seat, valve guide could all be messed up, but to be sure you need to take out the head.

Don't buy a motor with a bent valve....its a good sign that somebody has beaten on the motor severely, as in, drives the hell out of it and abuses it.

no it is not easy to replace a valve if you are not decently skilled with working on cars as it requires the removal and partial disassembly of the head to do so. yes it may or may not run like shit depending on the severity of of the bent valve and the loss of compression in the cylinder due to the bent valve. yes there is a good chance of further damage to other parts because of a bent valve. intereference engine's have the ever so likely situation of a piston to valve collision. how bad of a collision will determine the severity of the problem. no you probably shoudlnt buy a car with a bent valve unless you can get it for cheap because like it was stated above it was more and likely beaten. finally get a compression and a leakdown test done to the motor to see if there is even a problem. if its running normal and those test check out ok then it is probably a valve lash problem. |
