numbers question

can i get the specs to my cars engine by going to the dealership and having them look up the numbers on computer, and if so where are the numbers most easily read on the engine.

is it an older car, with maybe a small block v-8? there are numbers all over the place on them, like under one of the cylinder heads on the front.

ditto by the water pump under the right head (I think) and most definately the bell housing.

it's a 68 el camino with a 327 does that mean i can take the numbers to a dealership and have them look it up
