Humming coming from my tranny

I just bought a 97 GTP. On the way home with it I heard a humming noise. It needed new tires so I thought it might just be a tire noise. I replaced the tires and still have the noise. Now its getting louder. The faster I go the louder it gets. It sounds like its coming from the tranny. It sounds like a bearing noise coming from the passenger side output shaft. Anyone have any ideas what this noise could be?

Re: Humming coming from my tranny

It does get a little loader when I turn the wheel. But we put it up on jack stands and ran it up to 50 mph. The wheels where never turned and we heard the noise coming from the tranny. Unless the axle is amplifing the noise to the tranny.

Re: Humming coming from my tranny

Teach your tranny the words to the song and it won't have to hum. Seriously though, when you jack up both wheels off the ground, the differential will disengage and neither wheel will get power. That is why with both wheels in the air, even in park, you can rotate the wheels (they will rotate in opposite directions). I would say from what you describe, it sounds like a hub to me also. Hub vibration can travel up the axle shaft, and make it sound like a tranny noise.

Sounds like an epidemic. I bet if you push the transmission to Neutral while going about 60 it will continue to hum. If you are going to change out the bearings yourself, get with Rich for a good deal on them. I'm changing mine out next week.

Re: Humming coming from my tranny

The transmission on my 95 gp was making a humming/whinning noise on acceleration which was getting progressively worse. I found my transmission coolant line had rusted through where it was clamped by the radiator. It only leaked when the car was running so I didn't notice it for some time. I was at least 2 quarts down on transmission fluid. After the repair the transmission was silent again. Something to consider.
