Question hungry durango?

hi, i have a 99 durango and recently i noticed that it has been comsumming more oil than usual. i check the oil reading (that stick that goes into the motor) regularly, but recently i noticed than it's been under the required line. i put 1 bottle in.....then in the next 2 to 3 days, same thing. there is no leaking, checked engine, no oil on the ground, nothing that says the there oil comming out. for some reason, "is eating more" ANYBODY KNOW WHY?

x3mtm,

That's odd in my book? How many miles do you have on your Durango. Mine ('01) has about 60,000 miles on it and no consumption at all.

Check your tail piper and check to see if your burning it. Other wise I'd get it in to a Dodge dealership when you can.

x3mtm,

At that mileage I'm surprised to say the least. If the pipe is black it's a sure sign your consuming it for sure.

Since it bellows black smoke at start-up you know the rings are shot. Bad news. I'm sorry to say.

I'd get it rectified asap before you ruin the cat as well.

x3mtm,

Sorry :-( I meant piston rings AND the catalytic converter. Only areas I can think of concern.

Re: hungry durango?

PCV could be bad. Oil is blowing through the valve and into the intake.
Some PCV's can be cleaned and re-used, I prefer the replace method myself.
If this is the case, get it fixed sooner than later. Pumping a lot of dirty oil through the intake will cause you some big problems if you let it continue.
You will end up with valve deposits and a ruined CAT.
At 80K miles, you shouldn't have ring or valve guide problems unless the oil wasn't changed as specified on a regular basis. If it turns out to be something major like rings or valve guides, trade it in, it isn't worth the problems that you are going to have if the engine is worn out b/c of neglect.
If someone neglected the engine to the point that it is worn out now, the transmission and the rest of the drivetrain is probably junk too.

neon_rt,

You brought up a point that I never thought of. In either case since he's well past the 60,000 mile service I'd think it would have been changed at that time. In my book to have the PCV valve go bad is not commom although anything is possible. At this time in the mileage game they don't cost much to change but again if it doesn't work you know at least you have elimated that possible part. Get it to a good mechanic to better yet the dealership.

x3mtm,

The PCV valve is a very simple item that's part of the smog system. Persoanlly I wouldn't sweat it dude. Take it to the dealership and to have them examine it. They don't cost much anyway.

Re: hungry durango?

Search this forum for using oil or oil consumption. If it started suddenly, it might be the intake plenum gasket. My Durango started using a lot of oil suddenly around 75,000 miles and that gasket was the problem. Its not the easiest part to change if not mechanically inclined.
Also BTW - BLACK smoke is usually a rich fuel condition, not bad piston rings, BLUE smoke is bad piston rings or worn valve guides and seals. (Like if neglect oil changes or thrash on you car.)

Hi guys,

That's good information so I stand corrected.
