700r4-92k1500 ?

Ok here goes..
92 K1500, 350 engine, 7004R transmission.


I've noticed a unusual noise coming from what I think is the
transmission at cold start-up. Its almost sounds to me like
a pump noise, some type of unusual whine / metal rattle noise.
Only hear at initial cold start and or if the truck sits for a long
period of time and only when you first start it. Sounds lasts
for just a few seconds and then diminishes.

I also hear a "whine" at the various shift points.

Transmission fluid is good.

Another thing, which I believe is related.
At normal driving acceleration truck will down-shift
and operate "normally". If you are going around
70mph on the hwy and floor the throttle (WOT) the truck
will act like its downshifting but the rpms will red-line if you
are not careful and the transmission feels as if its in neutral.
At WOT going down the hwy from a roll at 70mph the truck wants to rev
to the redline and it feels like the truck is in neutral.

I'm assuming that the transmission is about to go up in smoke??
I've made no changes to the transmission or to the engine, I did
recently change the gearing , but I don't see how this would cause my
problem.

Anyone dealt with a similar issue?

This only happened recently, and I only noticed it one day
when I was out driving around. I usually get in some WOT
runs to just see what its running like.

I have to say that the transmission feels like its totally slipping at
WOT from a kick down at roughly 70mph. If you let off the throttle
then truck pulls normally and shifts normally, also downshifts
normally.

If I have to replace the transmission any suggestions on an
aftermarket Trans or OEM rebuild. B&M, TCI,

I don't abuse the truck, but I've been known to give it a little
gas every now and then. Truck is serviced at regular intervals
including Trans fluid and filter.

I cant really help with the problem, but I can give some advice on the transmission if you go to replace it.

I bought a "Raptor" from the place you have listed (Transmissioncenter.net). It was suppose to be a heavyduty kickass trans, but it turned out to be a real piece of junk. Shipping is $250.. each way. So I didnt have much choice but to just eat shipping and send it back to them. This was after an hour on the phone with the raptor "specialist".

They returned a different raptor, missing the extra deep pan and tone ring I had paid for. This transmission was in worse condition than the first, and two local shops I talked to said these transmissions were in need of internal work.

I sent the transmission back to them after well over an hour on the phone troubleshooting it (again) with one of there "experts". They decide it needs to come back.... again!! Then the guys REFUSED to accept the delivery from ups. That means $250 down the drain sending it one way, and then having it returned for another $250.

They sent me a 3rd transmission (yes, you read that right, 3 transmissions so far)... This time, the deep pan and tone ring were still missing but the trans seemed to be working.

Moral of the story, go to a reputable local shop, or go with the B&M or TCI. Stay as far away from the transmissioncenter comapny, they are crooks.

If it's still shifting fine otherwise, it may not be that the trans is about to eat itself. I've had numerous trannies start slipping some under WOT (powerglides and turbo350s) and still shift fine and live long lives but 700R4s are weaker and may be an exception. Alot of times this can be an adjustment issue that I do not know how to tackle with a 700R4 (the bands can easily be adjusted on a powerglide to resolve this.) If it does eat itself, the only experience I have is buying a stock rebuild from Autozone. It was done by Accurate. Alot of these other outfits wanted $1500+. I got a 700R4 for my '88 K1500 for $950 and it's been behaving just fine for about five years being a daily driver and towing a trailer once a week. If you want better than stock, I would agree with going with a trusted name such as TCI. Otherwise, see if there's a good shop around. I found one too late that everybody I know is really satisfied with that would have rebuilt it for me (install and all) for $1100 and guaranteed it for as long as I own it.

the cold start noises are the "kicker" I think, if it were not for that then I'm thinking it might be something that can be corrected. I'm guessing is something to do with the torque converter or the front pump. But thats purely a guess on my part. I'm going to see what a local friend of mine thinks, who works at one of the local GM shops. My preference is to either deal with a local shop or I'm going to buy somethiing along the lines of a TCI unit. I'm not going to do the re-build game again.

just a follow up. I had the filter and regular trans fluid swap Friday, along with some other minor stuff. Anyway the noise at cold start went away and the trucks shifts and performs like it should. My guess at this point is that the old filter was restricted, its was GM part. This time around I bought all the stuff at NAPA and just had my friend service the truck and do some other general BS type work. The end result is that for now the truck runs ok. I drove it for a good while on Sunday, with a number of wide open throttle runs to see what it would do. Every time it worked fine. I'm going to continue to see what kind of prices I get, but I'll just drive the truck until it shows up again and we'll see how long it goes. IF I do replace the trans its going to be a toss-up between a Goodwrench transmission and a TCI.
