Question How many think the purpose of life is this?

Having been away from the influence of a religion for the past 3 years or so i've dabbled in the thought of why there is such a thing as life for a while now, here's what i've come up with so far.

There's just too many factors in the world that had to be absolutely perfect for it to have happened by chance, so someone must have created everything. And the only logical explanation for us to have free will for 80-100 years, is simply a test. Most religions that i've heard of refer to a war or some kind of conflict happening in Heaven or whereever, where the good were seperated from the evil. So one possibility is this is the seperation process, a chance to prove which side we're on. I'm coming from the belief that we are just souls occupying a body while we're here (we existed before this life and will after). And that's plausible to me as long as we can't create life in a machine. If this isn't what life is about, I don't see there being a reason for it. And if there's no reason for life, then anything we do is a waste. Some people say you live life for the good experiences, or to help your fellowman, or to advance our global society...but what good is that if when I die, that's the end of me. Nothing I had done would mean anything to me, therefore making living life pointless. So there must be something after...and if there's something after, then there was something beforehand too. Anyone agree?

Well, I would go into more detail than that but I hate talking about religion on the internet. However, I pretty much agree with what you said.

Re: How many think the purpose of life is this?

the purpose of life if relative to your existance you can say all the stuff falls into place so well but if we were not here we couldnt say that so therefore it would not have fallen into place perfectly because there would be no one to say it did. its wierd and hurts my head to think about but whatever. if humans didnt exist then we wouldnt have a purpose obviously. but since we do our purpose is what we make it to be. i cant put my thoughts into words cause theres no words for what i9m tryin to say.

the essential purpose of all living things
eat
sleep
mate
die

Re: How many think the purpose of life is this?

Can't let this turn into creationism vs. evolution, so i'll take that as a disagree and leave it at that.

Re: How many think the purpose of life is this?

To imply the hypothetical of "if we didn't exist" implies that someone didn't create all things. Therefore evolution would be spawned from that idea, hence evolution vs creationism debate, or some kind of debate which is not what i'm looking for. I got ya man, I got ya.

Before I answer that question I want to ask everybody something.

What makes more sense to you?

One day a clock maker was in his shop. He took the metals he needed and very carefully sculpted every single gear he would need. After some time he very neatly and nicely put every gear in the case. He tightened each gear down with the mini-screws until each were perfectly in place. After putting on the face plate he picked up the clock he had made and gave it a few good turns, letting it start to tick.

Or...

Several million years ago on our planet there were a group of metals laying around some volcanic ash. The extreme heat was able to melt the metals. The metals found themselves in a mold from the rock around them and began to form small teeth on a circle. Once these small gears had been created it took some time for some wind to blow them together on a metal plate. They were able to fall into place and a few bits of metal fell onto them and screwed them down into place. Since this took place near a volcano the heat was able to make chemical reactions in the air to gather up some molecules to form a face plate over the gears. The heat was able to get some other molecules to react and fall onto the newly formed plate to create numbers around this plate. So after all this time it layed there, a perfectly made clock just laying around in some ash. The only problem was...there was nobody there to whined it up.

So I'll agree, yes, we were created by a higher power and we do have a purpose.

I feel that everything is just a fluke. :/ I'm not sure on the if there is or isn't an entity powerful enough to exist to create auniverse and then allow organism to grow etc. www.xenostalgia.com in the thoughts page i've written some stuff on it if you care to read.

Re: How many think the purpose of life is this?

Religion performs limited thinking. It fulfills those who have questions whether or not the answer is right or wrong. Our questions divide us as a race because most everyone thinks he or she is right when the matter of the fact is (pun intended) nothing is true because we keep looking for an answer for the 'bigger picture'.

Very few have an 'open outlook' on life. Those who do believe anything and everything is possible.

Now excuse me for I have to go because people will now try to perform "limited thinking" on me.

Re: How many think the purpose of life is this?

Yeah i'm keeping an open mind for now, i'll close it at some point, one way or the other. I just feel that the thought of humankind being the highest power there is, is naive and selfish. Naive because we would have to be all-knowing to think that, and I KNOW we're not. Selfish because we want to be the best at everything...we want the best country, best car, best looking g/f, best football team...leaving no allowance for us to be less.

its a lot more likely believe it or not once you consider the trillions of planets and the billions of years the earth has been believed to be arround

The meaning of life is to have sex then die.
Anything else you happen to accomplish just fills in the gaps.

you see thats not how evolution works at all. it is a natural process u dont just clump together a bunch of molecules and tada you get a human. if nucleic acids and dna and prtobiotans can be formed in a laboratory then that pretty much proves that you dont need an all powerfl creator to make life. ive explained evolution too many times in this board so ill just leave it at that. i said i wouldnt get into in this thread but someone put up a very innacurate comparison.
