do i have to have EMS to run turbo

Newbish question, but do i have to have an engine managment system to run a turbo? my friend has a civic ex and just purchased a 14b turbo for it. But i told him i was pretty sure you have to have an ems to run it. and he says no, he wil just take out some timing, and add fuel.. Is he right??

Re: do i have to have EMS to run turbo

you don't have to run a full engine management system to boost, but i would recommend it if you're going to make some decent power. You can use an FMU, an SAFC, or a VAFC if you don't want to convert to OBD1 and tune.....

You will probably need bigger injectors unless you're not making any power at all....i would look into DSM 450s and some kind of the afore mentioned system....you have to use one of those or a computer tuning software in order to boost....i think that was your question

comparing an fmu to an ems is like,

why shoot a bird with an arrow, when, you can shot him with a machine gun.

Re: do i have to have EMS to run turbo

well it is, but he wasn't specifically asking about the EMS......and as far as the EMS, i wouldn't run it unless i was planning to make more than 500whp.....my

Crome or CromePro get my vote!!

I origionally ran an FMU and blew up my motor, then I ran an SAFC and blew up my motor. Stand-Alone or "EMS" I am doing alot better but as far as a basic turbo setup goes, just run an SAFC and have someone that know how to tune it properly adjust the settings.

Re: do i have to have EMS to run turbo

oh, if we're talking any engine management software, i retract my previous statement.....i would use some sort of ECU management system like Crome on any turbo build....i thought we were talking about AEM EMS.....
