$10 Oil Filter

Would anyone actually spend the money for a $10 K&N Oil Filter?

Someone must know what the differance is between a $2 Oil Filter and a $10 Oil Filter.

Is it really worth all that money considering, if your systems oil filter gets plugged up, all it does is bypass the filter? Is it really worth the $8 inflation?

I would have to say it is not worth it. I like to think that the filters coming from the factory must do the job fine. Think about these trucks new when most damage can occurr and these $20,000 to $50,000 trucks come with an AC Delco filter, if something goes wrong they need to warrenty the motor. I try to use AC Delco and you can find them at different auto parts stores (Autozone) for $2 to $5 bucks instead of a dealer.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

Here's another twist to this issue. The OEM's pretty much go by three things, cost, quality, and statistics. AC Delco filters are produced by the millions (probably in 3rd world countries) and are good, cheap filters and meet their minimum requirements. But statistically, how many of those ultimately end up in a warranty claim. Is it worth the extra cost to GM to put a more expensive filter on their vehicles? Obviously not.

There is nothing wrong with AC Delco filters, I use them myself religiously, but I have to think K&N filters are at least a little higher in quality and may offer a little better filtering capacity. I don't know the spec's of each, but it is ultimately up to the user to decide what he wants for his/her vehicle.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

The manufacturer of any motor, if you look in the right place for the info, will give a recommended micron size for the filter. Mack, Cummins, Detroit, just to name a few. I know Ford does and I am sure GM does it also.

Obviously, the larger the micron, the more dirt can pass through but the filter will pass oil longer. The smaller the micron, the quicker it will plug up.

As for oil filters with a bypass. Are you really going to operate your vehicle without an oil change to the point that you would need the by-pass? The only by-pass filter I would install is on a vehicle with multiple filters.

Just my humble opinion.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

AC Delco is a great filter with a great antidrainback valve.

Go for the more expensive filter, it's only 8 buck and if you are using synthetic, you will make up for the cost with fuel economy and a cleaner engine.

Don't buy fram EVER! JUNK!

Wow! Boy if that website doesn't open your eyes nothing will! Thanks BlazerLT. I was warned by a Dodge Stealer years ago about Fram Filters, but here is the proof. Thanks again.

OK, I'm intrigued here. Many moons ago, I used Purolators, but...........
I've been using Frams' for well over 20 years, and I'll probably go back to A.C.Delco for the Blazer and Corvette, and probably Napa Gold for the Chrysler, but,... just maybe, did the reviewer have an axe to grind with Allied Signal (maybe lost on Wall Street Big-Time?). I mean, geez, Ralph Nader or that Insurance Institute Guy, or even Click & Clack would have denounced this blog by now

I've never had a filter related failure on 20+ vehicles, but then again I've always been quite an@l about maintainance.

BTW, I use an $11.00 filter on my bike, don't now who OEMs it for HD, but it is CHROME.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

Fram was once a quality name brand loved and sworn by many.

But what still has the same name is not the same product.

They have gone overseas with production and their filters are 30-40% of what they used to be.

The paper antidrainback valve is almost humerous it is so shitty.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

I was told over 10 years ago that if I used a Fram Oil Filter on my wife's new Van while under warranty that it would void the warranty. I can't believe that Fram and Allied Signal is getting away with this obvious fraud. How can the box say meets or exceeds OEM requirements?

Does anyone know how Bosch is? I would expect this filter to be even better or the same as Mobil 1.
