what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

just a curious question i owned a 90 laser (stick) with the 1.8, and i have driven the 2.0s and the 2.0 turbo's and i do believe the 1.8 is faster then the just 2.0. but why? i know the 2.0 didnt make the power to weight that mitsubishi wanted (thus the addition of the turbo), but how in gods name was i able to burn the tires in the fisrt 3 gears (well some of 3rd if i dint hit it right it would wind down) on less the 2 liters of pop?

What the hell were you driving....because it certainly wasn't a N/T 1.8 liter...

Shit my fuckin garden tractor can spin tires...dosn't mean it has balls. Race a 2.0 and see who wins.

Re: what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

1.8L = 92HP/105TQ
2.0L = 140HP/125TQ

What you're saying never happened. Could've been a 1.8 that somebody turbo'd, or you just had completely bald tires. When I had my 2.0 N/T I raced 1.8s and burned em all day long.

Re: what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

the only was a 1.8 is peppy is if it is being pushed down a hill. haha no but for real it does not have a chance against a 2.0 and no way in hell against a 2.0 turbo

Re: what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

it may have had less the 100 hp , but after a cat back and some poor man intake adjustments (which actually help the throttle plates close and open faster) it had noticeably more pep to it. im not saying it would blow the doors of anyone, but if i were to pit the thing against my zx2 the ford would fall, just like neons, and yes i have dropped 2.0 n/t's both were friends of mine(only by a little though all of which were close but i led), and they hated losing, so iknew ild get a decent run from them, i think someone with a litle tech know how had it before i did, mostly cuz if you lines mine up v. another 1.8 mine sounded... (well as more throaty as a 1.8 could) like it had more lope to it. are there many AEM cams for the 1.8? it could have been the hills of eastern ky, had lots of them, and i always could take the corners a little faster then them. that coulda been it too. light car + sharp corner= fast exit speed, and heavier car+ same sharp corner= slower exit time

Re: what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

the reason the 1.8 feels peppy is cuz its geared low as hell. your car might have had the timing advanced some since its a distributor that can be advanced pretty easy.

the 1.8's really arent that slow compared to other 4cyl NT cars. they're just slow cuz we automaticly compare em to our turboed beasts

Re: what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

my friends 1.8 gs 5 speed wouldnt even keep up with my 1.5 crx lol. Lets face it, a 1.8L 8 valve motor is build for one thing, gas milage.

Re: what made the gen1 1.8 so peppy?

Yes do please define peppy. I raced my friend gene who had a 1.8 5 spd with my old beatup tired 86 fc that was ready to lose a rotor housing with its porr cracked o-ring.. I let him go first and it still wasnt pretty by the time It took me to get to 100.
