Rust Question

Are Metro's notorious for rusting out to the point of not being able to drive them.I live in Wisconsin (salted roads)and the doors and fenders of my 96 170k car are getting pretty rusted not to mention the three deer hits I've had. That doesn't bother me,I love this car. What does bother me is that where my drivers side lower a-frame meets the body the sheet metal is rusting out pretty bad.Part of me says leave it alone something else major may happen first and I'll never have to address this problem, the other part says an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And while I'm at it I'd like to thank everyone who contributes to this forum theres been some great posts lately, I won't mention names for fear of leaving someone out but you know who you are.

Re: Rust Question

Thanks Blake,
I drive to work through thick deer country at 5am just when they are going back to bed.The last one I hit I thought was coming through the windshield so I layed over into the passenger seat and when I stopped I went looking for him, he was a decent sized buck, and couldn't find him.By the time I got to work I had almost convinced my self that he didn't go over the top of my car but when I got to work I found hair jammed into the rubber strip that goes along the top of my windshield. It did very little damage, its just like I scooped him up and over the car,I would have loved to have it on video because sure he caught some major air.But like I said he walked away because I couldn't find him.We just got a wire feed and have had good luck welding thin stuff so I think I'll give it a shot.I'd hate to part with this car it hardly uses oil(by the time it needs a quart its due for a change most times)and its so easy to get at most things. My wife and friends give me a hard time about it cause the body is in bad shape but that just makes me like it more.
Thanks again for the info.

P.S. The hard time people give me about my beat up Metro is inversely proportionate to fuel prices.

Re: Rust Question

The control arm brackets rotted out and one of them broke on my wife's 1996 1.0L metro. The car had 185k miles. Ran perfectly. Used 1qt of oil every 5000 miles, an had 63psi (new spec) oil pressure. Best car I ever had. I'm in CT and have been looking for a new body but no luck.

I have a 1997 also.

Buy a metro. Invest the rest. Live like a king when you retire.

Re: Rust Question

I have a '96 too that has rusting control arm brackets (where it attaches to the frame) I think I could probably weld some reinforcement in place once I take my welding class this spring. That's the only rust I can find on the whole car. How have others dealt with this? BTW I live in NH where salt rules in the winter.
