1994 TBI 350 Breather

originally i was told some models had the adapter built in for aftermarket breathers with the 1 prong. well unfortunately mine does not have such an adapter. so my question is this, does anyone know who sells an adapter? i would prefer to use a 14inch open element breather instead of the bulky restricting snorkle thing. links of any kind would be nice, if not, the national shop or something to get it would be awesome.

While it'll sound more like a four barrel, one word of caution: both my brother and I both saw a small drop in gas mileage in going to open air breathers on these trucks. The snorkel feeds a little higher pressure and cooler air to the engine on the highway, that's why its there.

i understand the pros and cons of an open air element to a degree at least. did you or your brother have to get an adapter?

Re: 1994 TBI 350 Breather

I don't believe there is an adaptor that bolts to your 2 stud going to a single stud, but I have seen on jegs.com that there is a replacment brackett that replaces the double stud version just for the change to open element filter.
I have the single stud type and have flipped the lid on mine to see if performace would be better, I noticed small gains in performance but my major problem is with the noise when the lid is flipped, it sounds like an old 4v q-jet being opened wide without an air filter at all, It's annoying to me, a bit of all show no go.
I know performance and mpg will suffer from the intake of warmer less dense air being fed from the hot engine conpartment through an open element filter but where I live it stays pretty cool year round and this is not a big factor.
I found that a fair alternative was to modifie the original cold air intake, there is a very restrictive double cone shaped baffle that can be cut out of the hose that feeds the air cleaner for starters.
I'm not a real big fan of aftermarket cold air intakes they are almost as limited as stock air filters, but are better than open element filters.
My choice was to build my own, I found 2 large bore snorkles at a junkyard attached those to my stock air filter housing and ducted those up behind my grill, not all that hard or expensive just took a little time and thought.
the dual snorkles look pretty cool too.

Re: 1994 TBI 350 Breather

We just made our own open-air breathers by cannibalizing some old two-barrel units. I don't remember the particulars as it was quite a few years ago (I've long since put the stock breather back as I moved to an area with inspections.) One thing I did do a while back was the aforementioned baffle. I can't remember the manufacturer by I put a chromed straight pipe in place of the plastic pipe with the baffle. It looks better but I don't think it did anything noticeable performance-wise.

All you need is the stud, theres a threaded hole in the center of the throttle body to screw in the old style stud... its actually more towards the front since the factory study goes back on an angle...

Profox, There is an icon on the top of the frame for "quick reply" that says "post image" when you put your pointer on it, click it and the rest is pretty self explanitory.

Re: 1994 TBI 350 Breather

Charger is right, the stud I saw on jegs has a 1/2" or so offset to make up for the difference, the stock studs have this as well.

Re: 1994 TBI 350 Breather

Why not install one of those K&N air cleaner lids that has a filter element built into the top? It'll add cfm without letting the dirt in.
