Convertor

I'm putting mild cam in my dodge 440 and they ( Comp Cams ) recommend a 2000 stall convertor. I don't know much about this and need to find the rite way to go and where to go too!! Thanks Mike

Re: Convertor

You probably already have what you need.
The stall speed is the RPM that the engine rises to when you apply the brake (to keep from moving) and apply the throttle (when you are in gear at a full stop). If your engine is stock now and can pull 2000 rpm in a stall, when you change the cam you may (or not) reduce low RPM Torque and will not be able to acheive the same stall RPM. If you can't, you may want to have a performance transmission shop install a Torque Converter that would be better suited. If your stall speed is too low, you may "bog" or not be as fast as you want to be off the starting line. If your stall speed is too high, you will have too much Torque off the starting line and you will spin the tires too easy, also the TC will be slipping a lot more and can potentially cause overheating problems for the Transmission. If you are needing a high stall for weekend racing or something, you would install an Auxilary Transmission Cooler to protect your trans in everyday driving.

Re: Convertor

Call B&M, they will talk you through the best torque converter to get for that. I have a 440 myself and im gonna go with about 975 MAYBE 1000 RPM stall speed. Its all in what you want, HP or Torque...the long debate continues...but don't kid yourself, without torque you don't move....

Re: Convertor

Most original 440 727's (common street cars, not trucks or Muscle cars) had 1800 RPM stall converters.

Would you really need a 2000 stall? If you were that picky and into Bracket racing, well maybe... but it's not necessary. If your car was a "Muscle car" then it likely already had a "mild cam" and a 2000rpm stall converter.

What purpose are you using the Car or truck for? It matters. The original 1800 stall converter is better for you if you're driving this car everyday and in traffic....

Your list of options goes on and on and on....

More details please!

Tom
