EG Civic hatch build +OCD window line fix.

I was discussing this with one of you (I think it was TBTwenty or Willmo) that Hasegawa kind of screwed up the rear side window lines on their EG hatchback model. It sits too low, and is too rectangular.

I know that if I built the model as-is, I would be pissed every time I walked past in sitting on my shelf . The window also sit too far into the model, looks too toy'ish because they fit like rubbish.

So I have taken it upon myself to attempt to correct that.

Look at the distance between the lower rear corner on the rear side window from the gas cap. Take note of the level of the lower portion of the back window in comparison to the side one, the model sits to low. It's because Hasegawa, or who ever did the original of this, didn't give the lower line on the rear window an aggressive enough upward rake.

Why do I obsess about this? Because I can . I also think that among the Peugeot 206 and 207, the EG is one of the best looking hatchbacks ever made.
What am I going to do about it? See below my friends.

Now my fix isn't perfect, but its closer than the original form.

I am also going to section out the glass to make it fit better. More trimming later probably.



This stuff is wonderful putty. Two part 1:1 mix. Very smooth.

Unless my memory's going it was probably willimo that you were talking to. Either way it's nice to see someone going the extra mile to fix this.

Nice progress, good luck on fixing the window. Seems like you have good eyes as i wouldn't have spotted this. Also becareful on the front pillars as they brake really easily.

Really nice fix. It's a very minor change but I think adding that little contour really captures the look of the car. It's really that rear glass and the "shoulder" between it and the rear wheel arch that makes EGs look so good. You did a great job fixing it.

I hate the glass in these kits - very thick and don't fit at all. I think the next EG I make will have clear styrene in place of the kit included glass. I've experimented on a Fujimi EK, making the rear glass flush mount to the body like the 1:1. In that case, I used the glass Fujimi provided and cut the rear quarter glass off the rest of it, and sanded it until it fit into the hole, flush with the body. I think it looks pretty good, but Fujimi clear plastic is much thinner than Hasagawa's.

Lets resurrect this bad boy.

So I got moved into my new place a few months ago, but never resumed my models. Well today, all of my friends were busy, so I decided to watch Seinfeld all day and start working on my Civic model again.

Today I finished the window fix.





I also cut the rear windows to that they fit into the frame, instead of behind it creating that awful ledge. The ledge is fine for the front window because they "roll down", but the rears should be flush with the body.




That's all for now. Tomorrow I'll probably have at least the first coat of paint down.

May I know what you used to scrib the lines? Cause i've been having some trouble scribing panel lines on epoxy putty...

If you guys want, I can trace the rear window, scan it, and post it on here for you to use. That way you'll have the basic shape.

It's not perfect, but I think it's more correct than the way they had it.

For the scribing: I first used masking tape to line up where I wanted to scribe. Then I slowly any lightly used the back edge of an exact-o (not the sharpened side, it has a mind of its own!) and scored a light line. Then went over it a few more times. Then used a slightly larger blade to make it bigger. The finished it off with a small brad/nail. To add contour I used the sharp side of the exact-o and slide it side way, as if I was spreading butter.

Make sure you use a very hard and fine grit putty or it will crumble away on you.

the scan of the window would be helpful, it would save me alot of time. can't wait to see some paint on this thing.

Here it is in two formats. These are exact when I put the paper over my screen as compare them as a transparency. My monitor is set to 1920x1080. Hope you don't have to resize the picture, but if you do, the vertical part that would be the back of the B pillar (on the left one) should measure exactly 19mm.

Didn't get much done tonight. I spent half my time reinstalling stupid scanner drivers, and the other half toying with duck bill rear spoiler ideas, and Spoon/Mugen style front lip ideas. I also removed that trim lip that is on the forward facing part of the window. It doesn't belong there. I tried to get a picture, but my camera couldn't focus. So I made this useless picture instead :P

So I got a tad bit more done today.

I don't have much experience with putty. What is the best putty to use? I am using a two part putty, and it seems to have little voids here and there. I hear the Tamiya stuff is pretty good, any suggestions?

I'm pretty much done with the wing. It's more Mazdaspeed3 that Mugen, but hey, I like it.



I've started to make the interior more realistic and detailed as well. This will most likely be the last front wheel drive car that I will build, and most likely the last Honda, so I want to do it right.

I really love to use miliput 2-part epoxy putty. You get a lot for the money, its similar to tamiya but for the price you get 4 times the amount than tamiya for almost the same price. Although i might say that the tamiya putty seems a tad bit better in my opinion. But i really love miliput putty. The thing with 2part epoxy is it doesn't shrink and you can shape it without hurrying to shape it before it dries like regular putty.

I like the wing.

Yeah, miliput is what I'm working with. Do you have any suggestions for making in smoother to work with? It's a bit firm.

I've finished the interior panel trim. It looks off right now, but once it's painted and the rest of the interior is in, it will look good.




The putty absorbed the sketch lines that I put on the tape, this certainly made cutting a lot easier.
