COMPLETED: Tamiya '71 Skyline GT-R

My second Tamiya build, again came together beautifully. The paint is Duplicolor GM Medium Marblehead with Duplicolor clear--again I am astounded at the quality of Duplicolor finishes. Sorry for the poor quality interior photo, I tried my best to get a shot through the window. Model is box stock except for the engine: I found the stock air cleaner ugly and difficult to paint evenly, so I found some velocity stacks in the parts bin, cut them short, and laid them on--I think it turned out fantastic. Plug wires and battery wiring were also added. One of my best engine bays I think

And in case mike hadn't heard my response in the Progress thread, I paint grilles using a blackwash of about 1 part flat black to 4-5 parts thinner, then after I lay it down I rub the raised areas off with a kleenex--usually takes one or two tries.

Engine looks great, the body doesn't have a shine to it, did u polish it? Overall a nice, clean build.

It has been polished yes, I just suck at photography and my camera is piss-poor. At least I finally got the right lighting on the area, I think. It does look shinier in person. :P

Re: COMPLETED: Tamiya '71 Skyline GT-R

Very nice! i like the engine alot. I also use Duplicolor metallics with good results but only on older cars like this as i find the flake a bit to big for more modern paint jobs. Keep it up!

Re: COMPLETED: Tamiya '71 Skyline GT-R

Now that I like, but I would
Engine bay bay work is great , I have to agree about the standard airbox, the stacks look loads better.

Please take some photos outside it would make so much difference or turn off the flash and take on a sunny day inside.
If sure it's only the flash photography making the flake look to big.

Are you going to add the decals to the front wings?

Yes, it's not a curbside kit, one of the few reasons I went with it.

I left the badges off the front fenders--I was really disappointed in them and I didn't understand how they worked (rub it on, peel it off etc) until after I had plastered it on there and it looked horrible for a few hours. Ended up half ruining one when I tried to pull it off. Live and learn I guess.

Re: COMPLETED: Tamiya '71 Skyline GT-R

I really like the look that you have achieved with the paint, I don't think the flake looks too big, IMO the flake size suits it very well in an old school sort of way. I built one of these old Skylines a while ago and it was one of the most enjoyable car kits that I have ever built, it nearly built itself as the parts were such a good fit. I painted mine in a nice metallic red with the standard steel rims painted gloss black. Silver is such a weird colour to take good pics of as they reflect a lot of light back at the camera and I think thats why they never appear to look glossy even when they are very shiney, keep up the good work and I think the ram pipes look really slick by the way.

Well bear in mind it's Duplicolor paint too, which is designed to be used on 1:1 cars, so I suppose the flakes WOULD end up a little big

Re: COMPLETED: Tamiya '71 Skyline GT-R

I hope you arent taking my statement the wrong way. I wasnt saying it looked bad, it looks great. i purposely use larger flake paint for older cars but modern car paint has come a long way and the flake and pearlescence used sayin post 90's cars is much finer. thats all i meant. for the period i think its perfect.Refer to my old BMW 308 thread for more on this.

Looks good John. Yes I did miss your reply, lost track of the progress thread. Thanks, I did sit down and painted the grille finally. Mine should be done soon. I went a little different route than yours. Hopefully some pics next week.
