car not staying running
85 camaro with 5.0L not staying running. In the morning when i start it , it runs fine but also idles at about 2000rpm, but after it idles down it runs fine. For some reason in the afternoon when i start it, it runs ok for about 5minutes then it just stalls, start it again and keeps stalling. I sprayed some carb/choke cleaner on the carb but still same situation...help please

Re: car not staying running
Check all vacuum hoses.
Check trouble codes. Does it seem like its starved for fuel when it dies? Do you smell fuel when it dies? Low oil pressure? (there is a oil pressure sensor that will turn off the fuel pump if the pressure drops too low, or it thinks its low) How does the car idle at stops when warm? Does it lope, surge, or idle erratically? |

Re: car not staying running
Also, it may be time for a mini tuneup. Id recommend changing:
spark plugs distributor cap and rotor air filter fuel filter PCV valve Id also check the spark plug wires(change if necessary) and timing(adjust as needed). |

Re: car not staying running
thats just the thing tho...i got new wires, distrubutor, air filter, i gess i need to put plugs in (they still got good spark but oil deposits
) i'l try a new pcv and fuel filter as well....the oil pressure is good..a little fuel smell(but not all the time)........and when i stop some times it will stall but sometimes it will stay running.....the rpms also jump around quite abit...like for example...it'l be revin at 1000rpm then rev up to 2000rpm then drop and stall.....thnx

Re: car not staying running
Also check the trouble codes and the timing.
When checking the timing, if the white line seems to move or jump around(the line should appear to be stationary if the EST wire is disconnected and you are not making adjustments to the timing) then it is time to replace the timing chain, sprockets, and tensioner/guide. This is a normal maintenance type of repair, (like a spark plug but not as often ) If you do it your self, it will probably be less than $100, if you have a shop do it, expect to pay much, much more. Id say a minimum of $300, and that would be a good deal. Last edited by malletslinger; 01-25-2006 at 09:01 PM. |

Re: car not staying running
Sticky carb from what it sounds like. Especially on the choke plate.

Re: car not staying running
Have you checked your codes?
They can be helpful...see 87 IROC Idle/throttle problems |
