Angry 1992 Cavalier ABS light staying on

I have a 92 Cavalier. The fuel injector was leaking. Took to a garage for replacement. Mechanic let a piece of injector fall into motor. Motor ruined. Garage found and installed a motor from a 93 Cavalier. Picked up car and ABS light was staying on. This had never been a problem before. Garage ran all kinds of checks on sensors and wiring, could not find problem. Took to an electrical shop for diagnosis. They believe problem may be in the computer! Of course garage says they did nothing to computer and don't want to replace that because they didn't touch the computer. I do know they had the right front wheel off. I don't know about the left front. Aside from re-checking all the connections at the sensors, is there any other place to check for loose or bad connections. Also, is there a way to reset an ABS light?

could possibaly be the computer adjusting to the new engine. How long have you had the car with the new engine in it?

Re: Re: 1992 Cavalier ABS light staying on

I just picked up the car yesterday. Noticed the light on upon picking it up at the garage. My wife asked me if it could have anything to do with the different engine. I never thought of that. I did not know if it would make a difference. Can the computer actually adjust itself? Or does it take some help?
Thanks for the reply.

it seems to me that if the shop installed a new motor, they should have put the car through a relearn procedure before ever returning the car to you. If the electrical connections are all ok there is a possibility that one of the exciter rings on the cv axles could have been damaged and the sensor is no longer receiving reference.

Re: 1992 Cavalier ABS light staying on

The shop did not replace the computer. They left the old computer on the car. I agree, the shop should have made sure everything worked okay before releasing it back to me, but they didn't. Of course they are trying to say the mechanic said it was already on whenever I delivered it to them to work on. I asked the owner if his mechanic is calling me a liar. He said no and after keeping it another day, he says he cannot find the problem. He thinks the only thing to try is a new computer. But he does not want to pay for it, says what he did has nothing to do with the computer...
I appreciate the comments and suggestions. I think I'll let my son's engineering classmates at the college help me figure it out for one of their research assignments or something. ha
Thanks again.

Re: 1992 Cavalier ABS light staying on

well unless your receipt states on it that the light was on upon arrival, then as far as a court of law is concerned, it wasn't. you should take it to another shop and have it repaired, then take the original shop into court. I have seen these things happen time and time again and I have yet to see a shop win in such a dispute so you should get your repairs paid for as well as your court expenses without any problem. good luck.
