Unhappy 87 GT fiero Help me I dont kno Anything

Ok well i bought an 87 GT black fiero for 500$ allz i had to to do was put on the new exhaust the dealer gave me....done that and its inspected and running and i got it on the road and a few problems ive noticed i would greatly appreciate some help. the tranny slips just a bit once in a while only after the car warms up and it waits till about 4000 to shift (automatic).>?. any ideas? ok next on the car seems to run hot but never really overheats and when it gets hot sometimes the check engine light will come on for almost no reason at all but when i shut off the car for a bit it stays off till im driving for about 20min.>? last but not least i noticed when i was driving and it was raining so i turned on my wipers and there were fine then they stopped workin and they would only work on high and nothing else and when i got home and parked they seemed fine like nothing was wrong. can anyone help me with some of these problems or gimme a few suggestions with the overheating and the tranny....maybe i have a short in my wiring for the windshield wipers.... occaisionally the car stalls when i first start it...? i dont kno anything about cars so could yah explain it to me like u would an idiot lol. any simple ways to make the fiero get better performance like acceleration would be nice too thanks

"help the noob!!!"

Re: 87 GT fiero Help me I dont kno Anything

Well, the transmission problem sounds like a torque converter going or valve body issues, but try a fluid and filter change first, it just might help. If the old fluid is brownish black in color, this is a sure sign it's not been changed in a LONG time. Worst case scenerio, a serverly neglected or abused transmission will require a complete rebuild and a new torque converter.

As far as running hot, it's common to see Fieros with air pockets in the cooling system. With a cold engine, and the car parked on a nice level surface, take off both the radiator and thermostat caps and let the engine run, topping off fluid at both points as needed. This will usually "burp" the air out of the system. Don't run it for too long with the caps off, or you'll boil over.

A check engine light that only comes on when the engine has warmed up is usually a bad oxygen sensor or the wire to this sensor is damaged - the way you describe it, it's almost a definite in your case. In rare cases, a bad or ill-adjusted throttle position sensor can cause this too. If you don't know how to read the car's "trouble codes", just ask. Trouble codes often give excellent clues as to where to find the problem.

The wiper problem may be in the wires, but it sounds more like the wiper motor is wearing out. If you have a voltmeter, this is easy to check.

As far as stalling goes, LOTS of stuff causes this: Worn spark plugs, wires and other ignition components, vacuum leaks in the fuel system, dirty fuel and/or air filters. The good news is, most of the above are inexpensive to fix at home and are part of the simple routine maintenance of any car.

All in all, it sounds like your Fiero wasn't taken very good care of by it's past owners. With much TLC, it should be back in good health in no time.

Re: 87 GT fiero Help me I dont kno Anything

yeah when my fiero was running, i had a few problems with it too. it needed to be warmed up, it had some blowby judging by the smoke that came out of the pipes, the speedometer was off by 50mph, most of the other gauges were inaccurate at best. low oil pressure, and after driving a while the CEL would go on, then go off after a couple minutes. oh well new engine so all should work well.

any suggestions on the speedo? could the gear be worn down or something? it would read 0 until i got to 50mph (found that out by radar) then it would go up normally (it would stay 50mph off, so it read 30 i was doing 80).

EDIT: clarified speedo problem

Re: 87 GT fiero Help me I dont kno Anything

Plastic speedo pickup gears normally shatter when worn, so either they work right or not at all. My guess is the problem is in the speedo itself or the pickup on the transaxle is full of dirt and grime.

Oh yea.... don't forget to flush your tranny cooler lines, a clog there can wreck transaxles faster then you can install them.

transmission

I had the same problem with my fiero. I replaced the Detent(kick-down) cable. The cable runs from the throttle body to the transmission, it sends the throttle position to the transmission letting it know when to shift. Your problem sounds like that could be the diagnosis.

Re: 87 GT fiero Help me I dont kno Anything

mmmmm.... I thought of that, but it's only a problem when it's warmed up, so it can't be the kickdown.(At least logically, but car trouble is often an illogical thing, so it's worth a look at)
