exhaust leak

ok, so i think my car has an exhaust leak.

when i go down the street it sounds way too loud, but its only at a certain RPM, and the idle is really rough. when i come to a stop i take the car out of gear and the RPM go so low, that it doesnt power the brakes, and one time i almost crashed, cuz of the pedal being to high and hard. if this is an exhaust leak, how would i find it, and are they easy to repair if its just the gaskets and stuff?

i have a 2.8 89 RS

PS the idle is really rough, and im eharing a wierd rattling sound from underneath, im not sure if its a bearing, or the leak, but i have no performance loss.

thanks for anybody who can help.

Re: exhaust leak

what he said. And as for the chattering its probably just something vibrating. Maybe an exhaust heat shield or something.

Re: exhaust leak

Yeah, put a vacuum guage on a moniafold vac. source and fire it up to determine where it's at. IF it is a clogged exhaust, vac. will start at a correct level and then slowly bleed off until an eventual rough idle and or stall.

And, a erretic bouncing is ussually par for a manifold vac leak (t/b, manifold. gasket, brake booster check valve?)

Re: exhaust leak

nice nice, thanks for the help. hopefully i can have access to a vaccuum tester, (i go to a tech school for automotive).

one more thing...... when i rev the engine then let off i hear are going (sorry im not good at describing sounds in text) ffffftttt ffffttttt fffftttttt ffffftttttt, but like 20 of thouse in a span of maybe 2-3 seconds, im thinging a gasket somewhere, before the o2 sensor, because maybe it has back pressure, so it gives o2 sensor false readings>? is there a way to tell which gasket it is? like if i plug the mufffler holes for a second, and have somebody check where smoke is coming from the leak?

Re: exhaust leak

oh yea, ive done this before, (for shits and giggles) me and my friend held both exhast pipes with our shoes to see if my car would shut off, cuz his would shut off, but mine would not shut off, so im thinking the leak was small before, and now its to the point where it runs like crap.

Re: exhaust leak

I would not recommend utilizing this technique at school.
