MKII GTI - Fuel Gauge Adjusting...Possible?!?

Hey Guys,
This is a 1992 GTI 8V, 5spd.
The trouble is with the fuel gauge. When the tank is full, the gauge reads full, and continues to read full till maybe ¾ of the tank is left, and then the gauge will move and read as the fuel is used. But, the tank will empty when the gauge still reads about 1/8th of the tank, nowhere near Empty, or even the red line. I was wondering if the gauge pin could just be moved a few degrees so when it’s empty, it reads empty, OR, is the better route to take the reader out of the tank and adjust it there (bend stuff), if that’s at all possible on these cars?
Thanks a bunch for reading!

Re: MKII GTI - Fuel Gauge Adjusting...Possible?!?

All fixed-
I drained the tank, along with a beer, took the pump/sending unit out, and saw that there weren’t any wear marks from the sliding contact on the potentiometer's pickups. I bent the float arm several times while installing it to get the right level of “empty,” then put a gallon back in. It’s right between the white and red line now, so “empty” has a 30 mile reserve. Sweet!
