86 ranger ?

hey, i have a 1986 ranger 4wd with the 2.9 v-6 and i have a question, (sorry if this has been asked before) but sometimes, more often that not, when im driving my truck it will start cutting out and running real bad. if i dont mash down on the gas it will clear itself. by that i mean that it will start running fine again. what do you guys thinks the problem.

thanks again, kyle

Re: 86 ranger ?

When you said "cutting out" do you mean that the engine stops altogether or it continues to run but not smoothly? Also did you mean that when it is running (moving) and you step on the gas pedal, it starts to run rough or quits? How does the engine idle? Does the engine quit if you gun it while idling? I'm trying to rule out comression related problem. Also anything on the Check Engine Light at all?

Re: 86 ranger ?

hey thanks for the reply, anywho what i mean by cutting out is that the truck is still running, but not smoothly. it idles just fine, and what i meant was if i let it cut out for a bit, then it will clear itself out, and start running smoothly. and no ses light.

thanks kyle

Re: 86 ranger ?

OK. It seems like your engine is cutting out under load. Assuming that you have no compression problem, check your plugs, plug wires and on to the ignition module. Try this one test. Do this under safe environment. With your engine idling, your left foot on the brake, put it in gear and then gun the engine. See if your engine will cut out. If it does it certainly seem like you have a cessation of ignition.
