Over Drive For Pontiacs

I don't think that alot of high powered engines can be bolted to most of these trans, I do think that the L480 and L460 could.

With the proper modifications, 200-R4's and 700-R4's can be very stout transmissions. 4L60-E's sat in '97-'04 C5 corvettes..

It's hard to argue thr 700R4 because it depends, I know I read about a 55 Chevy with a 383 with a 700R4, ran great till he added a ATI ProCharger and it let loose on the 3rd run, it was a JET 700R4 that was bought just for this combo.

I don't trust it, if you going to put down 2 grand on a 700R4 your better off spending another $800 for a L480 thats really a TH400 with an overdrive.

I was lucky to find a TH475 for my GTO, the drive shaft fits long ways in my trunk easy, very Short.

Kinda hard to believe too. I rebuilt more of those tramsnissions than any other, but they've all came out of 4 cylinder S-10's or 6 cylinder Blazers. I guess they commited suicide..

True, but with the right hardened parts(drums, shafts, planetarys, etc.) It can take a lot of abuse. I rebuilt one myself for my '91 caprice using a Raybestos blue plate special clutch and band kit, and a stage 3 B&M shift kit, plus corvette servos and all hardened parts. It outlasted the LT1 i dropped in..

Those 4L80-E's seem to be tough!! Supposedly handling around 800 ft. lbs. of torque. I say it's prob. closer to 500-600, at the very most...

Re: Over Drive For Pontiacs

I would love to put a L480 in my GTO, but I worrie about how well they can be built, I want it to ba able to handle 1,000hp and the TQ to match, I will pay 3 grand for it, but i'm not sure if they can do that.

Seems you have done your own trans work, most I have done is a B&M stage 2 and 3. I did sit down with a TH400 book, a while back, at the time it seemed that Mr. Spock would have to had helped me, but I want to try to do a TH400 in the future.

What tools other then basic tools do you need?

Re: Over Drive For Pontiacs

It all depends on the transmission your working on. There are a lot of specialty tools out there. Some are a necessity, others just make it sooooooo much easier. Wanna get some practice? Get a junk 400, and rip it apart. Take pictures of each step if you like. One thing I can't stress enough is Cleanliness. A speck of dirt or flake of old clutch material can stop checkballs and valves from operating.. I was working on a AOD-E Ford transmission a while back. Nearly pulled my hair out until putting in a reman. valve body. Seems those valve bores are so tight, a little shaving of teflon seal material had a spool valve jammed.

Re: Over Drive For Pontiacs

A set of picks is very handy, and make sure to have a set of GOOD quality reversible snap ring pliers, preferably one's with interchangeable tips.(You'll use them often, and cuss junk pliers). You'll also need a slide hammer to pull the pump with. I believe you'll need a small press, too, for compressing clutch springs. A transmission stand is handy, but not needed on this one. And as always, a good book with clear instructions, and lots of pictures. Just remember to remove the pan and make sure no solenoids need to be removed before pulling the pump. Oh, and lots of carb cleaner(5+ cans!), and a small tub of Dr. Tranny's Assembly Goo(This stuff dissolves in ATF, and is great for holding torrington bearings, check balls and thrust washers in place, and it protects from dry starts. Remember, cleanliness is key!! When you remove the valvebody, put it in a trashbag. If you decide to quit and pickup tomorrow, wrap the transmission in a big trashbag. Use ONLY lint-free cloths. Soak clutches for 10-15min. in ATF before installing them. Same goes for bands. If i think of anything else, I'll post it...
