1st gen CRX vs 2nd gen CRX

Greetings ya'll.

What is the diff between a 1st gen crx and 2nd gen crx? Lets use SI as the model to compare against. I'm looking at a 1st gen 86 crx w/ some rear end damage for 800$ but looks to be good otherwise. What would the advantages of getting a 88-91 be vs the 86?

Re: 1st gen CRX vs 2nd gen CRX

It was hit in the rear and they're still asking $800? I'd stay away from that one.

I'd get the 2nd gen, simply because it's the most popular one, and you'll find alot more info for them. The first gen may be a little bit lighter as well, but the 2nd gen looks better, and had more stock hp.

Eh, sorry about that. It was 3:20 in the morning, i was tired and high so... anyways. If you went with a 71-87 the only model that has fuel injection is the Si. Better gas mileage from the 4th gens. Theres MUCH more aftermarket support for 4th gens. And honestly, more peole will tell you that the 4th gen crx looks so much better than the 3rd. Heres a website that has some 3rd gen support and a forum. Thats about all i could find as of now. If i find out more i'll post it up

And yea, $800 is too much to ask for an 86 with rear end damage unless the rest of the car is flawless and the engine has less than 75k on it.

The 1st gen is smaller and lighter, but has a more compact engine bay, and less sophisticated wiring etc.
Doing a ZC swap is possible (unless its a world spec SI in which case it already has a ZC in it).
But doing a B16a swap is very hard, and requires a fair amount of custom wiring and brackets. (its possible, there is or was someone here with a B16a in a 3g Civic)

The suspension is differnt, most noticable at the back where its a live axle rather than the 2gs double wishbone.

And of course they are much less common than the 2g, a bonus if you want a unique car, but a problem if your unable to do all of the work yourself and have a good grounding in automotive engineering and mechanics.

live axle? i think i know what you meant, but unless its rwd/awd, i dont think it had a live axle in the back. a solid axle maybe...

There is no differnce. Both rear wheels are conected to each other by a solid bar. It might be a diff houseing containing a diff and axles, or it might be a simple steel bar as it is in the 3g Civic/2g CRX. It dosn't matter.
It will still hop around over bumps.

well live axles kind of have that connotation that theres power going through them, i.e. live wires. its semantics really, but i was in a nitpicky kinda mood at the time

Re: 1st gen CRX vs 2nd gen CRX

if you want a daily driver get a civic hatchback. ppl want way too much for crx's. you can get a civic hatch way cheaper and it will get good gas mileage. and if you ever want to mod any civic start with swapping out those shitty d-series unless your gonna build it and boost over a bar. I love the one guy at the track in a civic ex lowering tire pressure with a strict face and then runs 18.1 lol
