Bought 2001 Durango SLT 4X4 a few years ago. Bought from reputable dealer.
Back in August I had my front left tire slip a belt...Goodyear RT/S....wanting to wait for winter before I bought 2 new tires. So I put the spare tire on and placed the bad tire as a spare. The spare tire had lots of tread and looked great. However I have developed the same problem with this tire after installing it on the front left again. I had the ball joints replaced in the summer, and the dealer didn't mention any other problems (which is weird for a dealer). Is the new Ball joints supposed to greasable?? Anybody have any ideas on what causes a tire to slip a belt on the inside tread of the tire. It looks like a bubble in the tread. The tread on the whole tire still looks good. The inside tread looks great with the exception of the bubble and the left tread seems to be about 1/2 inch lower than the inside tread. I don't want to put 2 new tires on if there is something else wrong. I'm thinking alignment issues, any other ideas. Still have extended warranty on this puppy...... |

Re: Weird tire wear
it may be an alignment, cause after the ball joints were replaced they probably didnt do one (yes it will change alignment angles) describe this "bubble" does it bulge up, down? or does it look like the tread is "cut"
(just one little section that is lower, or higher than the rest) |

Tires weary
The bubble is in one area of the tire and is about 6 inches in diameter (left front and inside right part of tire) and the left side of the tire the right side of the tire is raised for the entire tire. It looks like the tire is running on an angle similar but not as steep as a "/". The tire tread is good on the left side of the tire....
Can we post pictures on this thing?? To have 2 different tires and rims do this is weird....... I noticed Goodyear RT/S had a manufactures defect between 2000 and 2004, but it looked like a mislabelling of 3 ply vs 2ply radial..... Its sounding like the to the dealer I go........ |

I have the exact same problem on 2001 SLT. If I still have it when the tires are due again, I'm thinking of trying another brand of tire. I also have new ball joints and fresh alignment, so it might be just a tire problem. |

I dont know if you have other people driving it, but it kindof sounds like you have a tire that has been pinched between a curb and the rim. as for the camber (the angle of the tires) do both look like "/ \" or is it more like "/ l "? i read in one of the replies that yours has a "fresh" alignment. even if you just got an alignment you may get bear like that if you have a bad ball joint(s) our truck is the oppisite (good inside, bad outside) did the place where you got your alignment done say if you had any problems?

treading litely
You kidding a dealer that doesn't suggest things to do.....they told me the first tire was bad and needed replacing...thats why I put the spare on....it was perfectly fine when installed, now the tire got the same frigging thing....
I'm afraid if I change the tires it appears fine 10,000 Km later the warranty would have run out and I end up with a major problem..... Left front is _/ ride side is normal.....-- |

Last year they had a recall on the front end. I don't remember what it actually was though. I think it was the ball joints though. I had mine replaced when it came out. But you might want to check the alignment like you said. That would seem to be the culprit.

Re: Weird tire wear
Durango's have the worst front suspension. Is the rubber smooth where the tire is worn, or is it feathery?
