Question Side pipes

I drive a reg. cab 2003 with a 4.8l in it and I'm considering putting side pipe exhaust on it. I've only seen this on old muscle cars, a few old trucks, and vipers. Has anyone else seen this? How did it sound? I'm assumin that it'd make it sound better and louder. Now the important question is how do I do it? Can I just take it to a muffler shop and have them do it, or is there something I don't know about that has to be done first? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Side pipes

you would have to get rid of your stock plastic gas tank i would guess. then ya you could do it, i don,t think it would look good and you will be ripping it off as soon as you go four wheeling if you have a four wheel drive. With four wheeling in mind you need to tuk that exaust up inside the frame rails as close to the body as you can, so its out of the way from rocks trees ect...jj

Check out these bad boys on my friend Mike's truck. I dont know how to put them on tho. They have a nice sound to them which is pretty loud but not too loud(louder than my magnaflow).

i had thought about havin somebody rig up the sport side exhaust like yours on mine, but one on each side instead, but then i figured, what the hell, why not have to big pipes runnin along the bottom, lol. since i dont do any 4 wheelin and only have it outta necessity for bad weather, are there any real issues im gonna face with these?

Re: Side pipes

I think those kind of pipes look better on the muscle cars. But if you "stealth" them and dump out before rear wheels on a truck, that looks very cool (see elroy's pic).

Re: Side pipes

It wont hurt the computer, and check JCWhitney if you want side pipes.

Re: Side pipes

i have a buddy with an ext cab 4.8 and he just has a single in and dual out flowmaster, but he has the two pipes comming out on the passanger side so he didnt have to worry about the gas tank. it sounds really good, the only thing i've noticed with his,w as at wide open throttle at about 4500 RPM's it gets a little high pitch. but your normal everyday drive its perfect. its makes the truck look great too!

Re: Side pipes

that high pitch is what keeps us necks driving big v8 old school motors lol. nothing beats the sound of a souped 454 hitting the optimum powerband at somewhere north of 5000 rpm. its a shear roar, that's all that can describe it... lol

if you guys want a real dual exhaust, try just skipping cats and mufflers all together (none of the cops check in nebraska lol) my neighbor has a 350 in his late 60's era chevy truck and when you try to talk inside it with the engine running, your voice sounds like your talking into a fan blade, its all garbled and stuff... its freakin sweet... just a bunch of "what??!!", "huh??!!", "I cant hear you!!!" WHAT??!!!!," "I CANT HEAR YOU!!!!!!!!!,"
WHAT!!!???

ive decided that as soon as i get my tax return, im going to get the exhaust done, so now im just wondering if you guys have any advice on things i need to look out for. ive heard that the comp. might be messed up because it wont be able to keep up with the fuel and will ruin the motor. definately dont want this. so i guess im just lookin for any possible help. thanks in advance for any responses.

Re: Side pipes

Well if u want side exhaust before the tires...then I would go with the Gibson Super Sport ones like elroy has..ask him for a picture if you cant see it clear enough. ITS hot. Like these guys are saying anything can be done, just to what extent do you want to go. Most likely if you want exhaust in front of the tires its PASS side only unless you do some modding. After the tires look at my truck for ideas. I used denali tips but I have seen many variations of this and let me tell you when that 5.3l lets go this echo is nice. Throaty is the word.
