Convince Me

I need to buy a new car for university just to get me there and back and last me 4 yrs or so. Looking for something sporty and semi modifiable. What kind of problems do 1988-89 300zx normally have, can they last high milage, would it last a half hour drive every day for a few years?

Whats your opinion, should i go for it? If not any other car suggestions?

Thanks!!

Firstly they are very good cars and you shouldn't have too many problems if you are careful.

The J-Spec 300zx's we get imported to NZ are generally very reliable but the turbo models sometimes have gearbox problems, (my Dad's automatic transmission blew up) so be sure to get those checked as well as possible if you find one you like.

Im not sure about how the mileage will get before things start going wrong, my fathers has 120,00km (75,000 mi approx) and is running beatifully now.

Well, since you're gonna get a Z car anyways, might as well get an older Z, such as a 240,, 260, or a 280. These cars have more tuning potential than a 280zx would. You have the possibility of swapping chevy big-block V8s, RB26DETTs, or even the VG30DETT. Plus, you get the added benefit of having bi-annual smog exemption.

Get a Z. My 86 now has about 150,000 miles on it, and it runs extrememly well considering what I've put this car through. If you take good care of one of these cars that is in good condition when you get it, it will run for ever. I've driven mine alllllllllllllllll over the place. I've put about 45,000 miles on it in about 2 yrs. I've done countless numbers of races, multiple run ins with the red line, drifting, fun in the rain, all kinds of crazy shit and it still runs great. Find a good one and KEEP IT!
