can a type r handle a turbo?
can a type r handle a turbo? and is it even worth it to turbo this engine if you have to do alot of changes with compression. and if not...is there anything that can be done to get more hp out of a type r? ? oh....and no type r hating...lol...its too late, the motor is on its way!!!

10.5:1 or whatever the hell their compression is isn't exactly ideal for boost. Get some dished pistons and drop it down to ATLEAST 9:1 and you could run 10-12 pounds safely.

IF you have a Type-R motor why not make it all motor? It would do much better as all motor then it would as turbo'ed. Go all motor you will not be disappointed.

yea i would go all motor on the type R as opposed to turbo. The compression is high but not too high. Either way it wouldnt be bad.

ah what the hell..get a small turbo. t25 with a small intercooler. why not?! doesnt matter what you go with all motor, you still cant beat the gains of a turbo.

IMO, the type R was built as a handler, and mods should not be made to deviate from this. If you want to go fast in a straight line, then get the turbo-- my friend has a R turbo running 12's on stock internals. I don't hear about any FWD cars running boost on autoX tracks. Again, it is your choice, but if you wanted to go fast in a straight line you should have saved the $$ and got a hatch. The R is in a handling class in all its own, and IMO it shouldn't be modded to deviate from that purpose.

Yes and if its tuned right then u can hit 12's - 13's stock bottom end!
P.S. Lower compression is not necessary for boost all the time! |

i think the jdm b18c-r has like....11:1 compression......if i had a type-r motor..i'd probably go all motor too.....just because you get more respect out there....but it's gonna cost a lot more....
but don't think the b18c5 is a bad car for turbo......you know the dc sports 9 sec hatchback rite?....the red one?....it's powered by a b18c5 w/ a turbo..... of course.....it's all up to you.....but i just wanna give some advice....figure out which route you wanna go BEFORE you start your build-up....just cuz it's like 2 very different routes to go N/A and turbo.....

As everyone says with the right tunning you can be ok but I dont think you can boos too high. As far as the hatch with the b18c5 that is running 9's I am pretty sure that, that particular motor is fully built and the compression had to be loweredl....I could be wrong though. In other words you can boost as much as you want but you will have to redo the internals (lower compression, rod) but then what would be the point of buying a Type R motor.

lowering the compression isn't necessary. with the aid of some type of standalone engine management system, you're able to boost higher. there are many B18C5 engines running 15psi daily. there is even an LS engine running 20psi on STOCK INTERNALS with the only modification to the block is a blockguard. tuning is everything. lowering the compression is to prevent detonation under SOME circumstances. running ~13psi should be fine with 93 octane gasoline and some tunings.
