Well you should go to court and fight it, you will probably get it lowered. And 53 in a 30 isn't that bad, so a Judge might work it down to like 45 in a 30 or more if you are lucky.

well, 53 in a 35 is pretty bad, because anything 10 mph or over gets filed to your insurance company, which means your rate goes up. it could be worse, because anything over 20 or 25 mph over the speed limit is wreckless driving I believe.

Anyway, here's how my lawyer always gets me out. He files a discovery request, which is basically where they have to send you everything they're going to use against you in court. There's like 8 documents for the radar gun alone. Most of the time the cops won't go through the trouble to get all the stuff, because it's a big pain in the butt, since alot of the documentation is in the state capital, where the state DMV headquarters are.

Anyway, if they don't give you the stuff, the court dismisses your ticket, and if they do file it, they're bound to leave something out. So just get a lawyer, it'll be a little more expensive up front, but your insurance won't go up. Someone else on the board suggested prepaid legal services, this isn't a bad idea either.

i have had 2 speeding tickets, both over 10mph and my insurance hasnt raised a cent since then, anyway to help you fight the ticket. ask the cop questions such as what the given range for the gun is, he should know it and provide info to back it up, then ask him the last time it was calibrated for speed, also most radar guns just shoot an area 18° wide so if there were other cars around you, it wouldve thrown the gun off.

good luck.

Another thing you can try for speeding is see if they have performed a road usage survey, They are supposed to perform one every 5 years. IF they dont you can use that to your advantage.

OK. First off, the radar-gun calibration idea. Won't work. People used to use that alot back in the day, and now they (the officers) have a form they fill out like every day saying that the officer calibrated the device using such and such tuning fork blah blah blah... It also states that the officer had a solid "bead" on your vehicle without any other vehicles in the vicinity.

Second, if you have tickets that are over 10mph, and they haven't shown up on your insurance yet, they will. Sometimes the insurance company isn't specifically notified about the infraction, so they won't find out until they run a check on your license (this happened to me when they went to move me into a lower risk bracket. They ran the check, found I had some tickets, THEN the insurance went up).

I would say that PhrOst has the right idea. Either that, or if you subpeona an officer to appear in court as a witness, most of the time they don't show up, so they drop the charge.

One other thing that I was thinking about yesterday (I don't know how feasible this is, or how to do it, but):
See if you can turn your speedometer down so that it registers a lower speed than you are actually travelling at (by like 10-15mph). Then, take your car into the shop, have them test the speedometer and fix it. They should then be able to give you proof that your speedometer was off by XXmph and that they did in fact fix it. Then, when you go into court, you provide that information to the judge, proving that the speedo was off and it has since been fixed, blah blah blah. They should be able to either drop the ticket or reduce it considerrably. Just a random idea I had.

the best thing to do is get a lawyer and have him help you out
with a lawyer i got 5 tickets knocked down and 1 toused out (2 cops wrote me up for the same thing twice) so out of a year and a half suspencin and like 20 PTS i ended up with 5 pts and the 500 i paid for the lawyer was money saved from what i had to pay Phila

AAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!
Got a ticket last night! Cop was a total dick. Busted me for doing 50 in a 30 and modified exhaust.
I said: "The exhaust is legal"
He said: "No it isn't"
I said: "Yes it is! It's DOT and SAE approved!"
He said: "No it isn't"
I said: "Well then I'll just get the codes and go to court... See you there."
He said: "OK"

Scratched the hell outta my tint with his little tint-tester, bitched him out for that.

He followed me for 7 miles before pulling me over...

Damn, I gotta get my radar detector hooked back up!

what kind of exhaust? If its DC sports like your signature they cant do anything. I am worried that that may happen to me one of these days because I have a muffler and not a full exhaust.

tint tester? They have those? That cop was being a dick for sure. When and if I get tint I will probably just get the rear window.

Yeah, I got a DC sports cat-back exhaust... I'll get that dropped.

Fortunately, he only tested my front drivers-side window. My front windows are at 25%, but the rears are at 15%. The tester he used is a box with a slot in it. They slip the window glass into the slot and it shines a light through from one side and takes measurements with a photocell on the other side of the gap.

Now, I just gotta worry about the speeding ticket.
