geo takes on a few big dogs

Last friday I picked up a 1992 Geo Storm gsi. Yeah, its in that teal that every geo ever made seems to be in, and it has a little bit of rust, but I was definently suprised by its capability.

Friday night I took it out. I had a little run in with a dark red 2.5rs on the highway. It had aftermarket wheels, exhaust and i'm not sure what else. I came up next to him on the highway and I downshifted to 3rd gear at about 70mph. That got his attention and he took off. I pulled about half a car length, and bounced off the rev limiter a couple times(first time racing it), and I then pulled about 2 car lengths before we hit traffic, and I had to slow down.

Saturday, one of my friends volunteered to drive the sc300, and we did two races. One was from a 50mph roll to about 100. The storm jumped ahead and pulled 1-2 car lengths. Then we did from a dig. The storm jumped away about a car length at the launch(sc300 is an auto), and then about 2 1/2 car lengths.

Some info about the storm... it weighs just under 2400lbs, 140hp, 120tq. 1.8 l dohc 4 cylinder, and its a 5 speed manual. It has relatively short gearing so I seemed to do the best from low speeds.

Maybe a metro. 1992 is also the lightest storm.

Re: geo takes on a few big dogs

I heard somewhere that the engine on that geo was either borrowed or used by Lotus in some of thier cars.
My boy used to have a Storm hatch and he ran 18s so yeah, his is probable a mid to high 17s.

Re: geo takes on a few big dogs

I'll see soon enough. I don't want to guess at how quick it is, one thing that really limits geo storms are the bouncy suspension and crappy tires. The p/o atleast made an effort to cover those problems. Anyone know what a sc300 runs in the 1/4. I'd say it runs a few tenths of a second faster than whatever that is. Its definently faster than my old 944 thats for sure.

Re: geo takes on a few big dogs

Lotus actually designed the suspension on this car and the Isuzu Impulse. Many parts on the Impulse and this car are interchangeable. There is in fact quite a big aftermarket for these cars. Another nice thing about the Impulse RS is AWD and turbo. Yummy...

Re: geo takes on a few big dogs

Would that put my car about mid-high 15s? I guess that sounds about right considering the power-weight ratio.

Wow, that's amazing - Geo beat a Lexus. Congratulations. So that means that you're faster than me?

If this section of AF is about street racing stories, then I really could care less if the story was about a UPS and Fed-EX delivery truck race where they are neck and neck at 50 when all of a sudden a DHL truck blows both of them away because he got his deliveries done early and had less weight.

Re: geo takes on a few big dogs

i could see high 15's being possible with it. Cavaliers with Ecotec engine have 140HP 150lbs of TQ, they weight in around 2700 lbs and run the quarter in high 15's stock.
