Short Shifter Install, Can I Do It?
I was simply wondering how hard it will be to install a short shifter into my car; could I, a person with little knowledge of cars (but knows basics) be able to put this thing in in a few hours? What all does this installation entail? Also, if anyone would like to reccomend any short shifter brands, feel free. Thanx all :frog:

I just ordered my DC sports short shifter. It should be a pretty simple install...I think you have to unbolt your exhaust (just to move it out of the way), then there's a couple bolts holding the shifter in place from underneath the car. Once those are out, the shifter should drop right out (assuming you removed the shift knob), then it's just a matter of swapping the new one in with new bushings and dust-cap... Shouldn't take more than an hour (including putting the car on jack-stands, etc).

Cool, just two more questions, then I'll be satisfied. Will I need a different short shifter when I get my B16 engine or does that not make a difference? Also, will the bushings and dust caps come with the shifter? If not, where can I get them? Thanx again :frog:

I think the short-shifter comes with the bushings, but not the dust-cap. If not, order them from Energy Suspension (www.energysuspension.com)
The shifter should work with your B16, but I think the shifter linkage needs to be shortened or something...

i dont know what is easier to install... a short shifter or an Intake?? What im trying to say is that it is REALLY easy and pretty self explanatory when you look at the shifter on what to do.

most short shift kits do not come with the dust cap, but it is a must have. My friends 94 GS-R has no dust cap and when he is cruisin down the hwy in 5th, unless he holds the shifter it makes noise.

What kind of a noise would that make? Because I had my mechanic put mine in and when I'm goin at a high speed or high rpm, and I'm holding the shifter, it feels like a real faint scraping or grinding or something but not when I shift gears. He did lower the exhaust so I don't think it's scraping that or anything, does anyone know what it is?

i installed my short shifter without taking off the exhaust. i took off my center console. the rest is frrom underneath. the hardest part was squezing the shifter into the shift linkage. mine is a ebay generic. when i put it on i put it backwards so it was facing toward the dash so i had to take it out and do it all over again. i dont remember what tools i needed but it was pretty easy. took me only like half hour to do. but i consider myself a pretty good mechanic.
i never noticed any noise but i havent been listening for it |

Is the dust cap the rubber thing under the boot that goes around the shifter? If so my car already has one so why wouldn't yours?
Anyway from what I have seen you... jack the car up Go under and un bolt the shifter from the linkage Go pull the old shifter from up top (if you leave the knob on it should work). Drop the new shifter in Bolt it to the linkage Done, I guess.

man can you do it that way ? if so the way i did it the hard way.
first i took out the center console then took off i guess thats the dust cap. then i went underneath unbolted the shifter from the linkage. then i took off this metal flat piece kind of triangle shaped thing like 3 or 4 bolts. then that flat metal piece drops down with the shifter and took out the shifter from the flat metal piece then install is reverse i dont think you can do it that way because if you jsut have to unbolt the linkage to pull out the shifter then what stops the driver from just pulling out hte shifter or dropping down the shifter. soemthing holds it in place. so yeha its pretty easy i didnt use my haynes manual or anything just went under there and started unbolting stuff till the shifter came out |

I just installed my short shifter, I was replacing a clutch at the same time so it was pretty easy. I already had the exhaust off and the linkage was hanging down so I just popped it in. Dropping a tranny with no tranny-jack or anything is a biatch, and no parts stores carried a pilot tool that worked for my 'rex so we rigged up some shit. If you're ever replacing a clutch in your 'rex make sure that the pilot tool fits the new clutch before you begin, save yourself from what I did.
