Quite frustrating...Has anyone of you ever tried a Humbrol spray can ? I have bought the metallic blue colour for my Alpine, because it's about a close match. I came home, shook the can, put it under hot water, sprayed the car... and it's a complete mess; big darker areas of paint, lots of orange peal, different shades... Ugly as hell. Oh, and I didn't primer, it was about same colour of the plastic. My Question is ; are these Humbrol-spray-cans acrylic or whatever, and WHY are they so crappy, or is it just me. Can I refix this ? pics laterz Ciao One dissapointed Olivier

Strip the paint of the body and start over with tamiya TS-54 light metallic blue. This spray can used to be called "alpine blue" and was made especially for the Alpine A110.
The A110 is a rare and nice kit, don't screw it up. And NEVER use humbrol clear coat. IT IS SHIT. I used it on my first 2 kits because some clown told me that tamiya clear coat was bad, I'm still looking for that guy to knock him on the side of the head. Because of his "advice" my WRC corolla is now off-white and my WRC impreza is browninsh-blue. |

Thanks for the tip Lambrusco Kid, I thought about using the Tamiya paints , but didn't know the exact number. Can I also just sand the body with 1000 grit, because I do not have CSC or do not know where to buy it. What do you think ? Thanks for the reply ![]() Ciao Olivier |

Sand the body to remove the paint?
I don't know, I never tried it. I think you can easily remove the paint with amonia but I am not sure. Wait a little bit, someone with experience will eventualy read this topic and tell you how to remove it safely and easily. Maybe you can also use the search feature with something like "strip paint" or "removing paint" Bonne Chance! |

Re: :( Quite frustrated about Humbrol...
Quote:
Humbrol spray cans contain an enamel-like paint. If it is less than a few days since you painted the model, you should be able to remove the paint by soaking it in caustic soda (drain cleaner) for a day or so. Do be careful with caustic soda: it is harmful to skin and eyes, so rinse the model in water before you try to scrub off any remaining paint. Caustic soda will also remove most types of putty/filler and prolonged soaking will make polystyrene brittle. HTH, -- Eric. |

Sounds like a whole enterprise to me...Isn't it just easier to sand it a bit, spray over it with acrylic or even primer and re-paint it ? since it's just one little (but fucked up) coat there's on there? Ciao a confused Olivier |

,I'd go for the sanding. If it's not too thick and you can smoothen it out, then yes, but you have to make sure that after the sanding everything is very very smooth. You can check that by overspraying with a light coat of varnish. When mess up a paint job, stripping is the last of my options. It's up to you, both ways will work but the sanding will be more time consuming, but then again it will enhance your sanding skills as well

Just a thought, but I bought a partially started kit from someone once. They hand painted it with enamel. I soaked it in some oven cleaner (Mr Muscle) for a day or so, and it just came away from the body. Perhaps you can give that a try.
