92 Lumina auto transmission

I have a 92 Chev lumina with a 3.1/auto I have the weirdest problem that I have never seen the like of before. I pulled up at the shops tonight and there was no drive or reverse. the car wont start in Rev or Drive,2 or 1 as it is supposed too and the park lock is dissengaging when not in park but when any gear is selected the car appears to be in neutral it has been making a few weird noises and slipping slightly at around 30 mph but nothing major to speak of that would cause problems, i have checked all of the fuses thinking that it may be electrical and all checked out OK. the engine light has not come on To indicate any computer faults. Has anybody seen this before Im hoping it is something simple and not a major trans failure that will cost a fortune as the car only has to last until Feb when I return home to Australia.

Otherwise does anybody near Chicago(where it broke down) want a cheap Lumina!!!!
