97 chevy s-10 blazer engines shuts off

I am having a problem with my blazer losing power when I am driving down the road. Does not matter speed or where I am, the engines just shuts off. I can put it in neutral while still rolling and restart it most times but it is a major pain. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone give me an idea of what might be wrong? The local dealerships don't have a clue and they just want to start replacing things in hopes of replacing the right thing. Sometimes it will just sputter like it is going to stop and then it will pick right back up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

So, the ignition switch could cause it to not start as I found in another thread as well as shut the engine off? We are actually experiencing both problems. Sorry if I am being dense but I am new to this and am tired of being told by mechanics that they don't have a clue. Thanks.

It seems to be a common 97 problem and from what i read here it is probaly the cause of your trouble. If we wait longer someone experienced will join in here who has the same problem.

Can anyone else give me some advice on my engine shutting off? I spoke with another dealership today and told them that I had been told that it might be the ignition and all they said was could be. We are planning a family trip and I really don't want to get stranded. Should we go ahead and change the ignition? If so, where can I get one? Autozone?

I have had the ignition switch problem on my '97, and before a complete failure, my truck would stop running as I was driving, but fire right back up like you describe. The next day, my daughter got stranded 25 miles from home when it finally gave up.Check for these symptoms of a bad switch:
When engine quits, do all gauges stop working. If they stop working, your switch is bad.If you can access the pink 12 ga. wire under the steering wheel behind the lower bezel, jiggle it when power is off and see if it comes back on.
There is a slight possibility your fuel pump is going out because of the sputtering you experienced.

Autozone carries the same exact switch that GM dealers carry. At Autozone, it's $90.00. The Dealer will charge $135.00. They are identical because I got one from a dealer, and another one from Autozone.

Hey did you read this thread.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbu...TCH+REPLACEMENT

I used it and another person just used it I cant remember what there name is. It was an easy guide to use to replace the switch. My 97 blazer had very similar problems as you are having. I replaced the switch and good as almost new. LOL Try the switch its around $100 but its a whole lot cheaper then the fuel pump. Maybe even try the fuel filter. Ya just never know. I am no expert on Blazers or cars for that matter but after reading all the threads about the switchs and replacing mine Id say its most likey your prob.

Hope this helps.

Oh and here is the link to my thread when I didnt know what was wrong

Okay. So is what needs to be replaced the ignition switch or ignition module? Is there a difference? My husband just went to NAPA and was sold an ignition switch for 20.00. I am guessing that is not the right part since an early response said around 100.00. Thanks.

I experienced the same problem as you. A new Ignition switch cured all my woes. Like the guy just posted, check to see if the gauges are lighting up. If they cut out or dont even come on when you turn the key to the run position then its most likely the switch.....should look like this....copy and paste to see the image.

Nothing is worse than a dealer throwing parts at cars. Good Luck

Napa doesn't carry the switch, that knucklehead probably sold you a module which regulates the spark to the plugs. Take it back.
Go to Autozone and get Wells p/n LS924, retails @ $85.00.
It looks exactly like the picture link in LTBlazer97's post above.

you dont want the $20 part. You need (sorry to say) the $100 part. It goes in the steering colum. It has a wiring harness with a plug on one end and a black box looking thing on the other end. I see if I still have a parts number.

Hope this helps
