'97 Grand Am horn
I have had problems with my '97 horn ever since I have owned the car.
To begin with, the horn worked the majority of the time. Since then, it has become less and less reliable. It became very finicky, working only a fraction of the time, and now it doesn't work at all. Does anyone have any suggestions? It seems to me like the switch inside the steering wheel is causing the trouble. How could I troubleshoot this? Thanks! |

Re: '97 Grand Am horn
I got a 99 and it does the same thing. Anybody out there that can help us. I even tried new horns. They worked for a while then stopped again.

The electrical contacts for the horn are part of the airbag module. It's a real blast to work with (ever notice it's about the same size and shape as an anti-personel mine?). Make real sure you have it disarmed, and handle with care. If these contacts wear out (and I imagine it's possible), I expect you would have to replace the whole airbag- a $700 part if memory serves. The clock spring is behind the airbag, and keeps pressure on the slip ring electrical contacts for the horn. My horn was failing for several years, and seems to work better after I took the airbag (and wheel) off and remounted them. I wouldn't say it's perfect, just better. I did have to mess with the spring to put the airbag back on. Maybe that did it?
