64 bit drivers
ok.
I've just received an e-mail from my pc builder regarding some... issues with drivers, as in there aren't any. The big problem right now is that they re having problems finding drivers for the Netgear 54mbps wireless router (DG834G). Does anyone here know of any other wireless router that definitely has drivers for 64 bit windows or would it be any easier if I forego XPpro and just go for Vista 64? cheers.

Re: 64 bit drivers
You don't need drivers for a wireless router. You login and administer it from a web browser.

hmm... what are they talking about. You should not need any drivers for that router. You access that router by typing its address in a browser ie/firefox/opera and then log in into its control console. All this is done via the network using standard networking protocols regardless of what operating system you have eg: windows/bsd/linux/mac. As far as vista since you are using this comp to do serious work avoid it for the time being. edit: OZ ninja'ed his answer before me, that punk

Re: 64 bit drivers
ok, have to admit i have since realised this is my bad.
it isn't the router that has no drivers. it is my current lan card (that i wanted to recycle) that doesn't. this is what happens when a guy who knows shit about pcs (i.e me) tries to relay problems between three parties. problem has since been solved (another one has been sourced).

Re: 64 bit drivers
another sort or related question regarding 64bit windows.
I've been loking at the system requirements of 64bit and 32 bit vista and noticed something "odd". I've seen that 32 bit vista ultimate has a minimum requirement of 1GB RAM whereas 64 bit only requires 512MB. Is the site I'm reasing wrong or is there a reason why the more complex version requires less RAM?

those are very loose general recommendations ignore them. Also the 64 bit version is not really more complex, it just has the capacity to address larger memory "chunks" if you will. And again let me advise you to avoid vista altogether if you will use it in serious applications. Its not mature enough or its drivers, has tons of quirks and Microsoft has made some mind boggling decisions. Just to list some: purposefully crippling audio video paths just to lock DRM down, signed drivers required in the 64 bit version, overly touchy WGA, removing the hardware abstraction layer in direct sound (giving us with creative labs cards a big middle finger) etc... I've used vista for over a year now since beta 1 and initially i was willing to put up with its quirks because it was not finished, well now its finished and pissed me off so bad that I'm back to xp and waiting for creative to give me drivers to switch to ubuntu once and for all. Mind you not that there are not some good things in vista but right now its no good for serious profesional applications. stick to xp32 or 64 bit

Re: 64 bit drivers
Vista does everything XP does slower and worse, but shinier.
Stay the fuck away.
