Choice of Radio Replacement and Speakers

I have an 86 S-10 Blazer w/197,000+miles and the stock radio keeps switching from am to fm and there is a lot of crackling in the speakers.

My plan is to replace both radio and speakers with something that plays CD's.

Can someone who has done this reccommed to me a brand of radio and speakers to get for the replacement?

I just recently had the trany flushed and filter changed on this 2.8L motor and it certainly has made a difference in how it shifts and runs.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Choice of Radio Replacement and Speakers

Don't replace your deck until you look at satalite radio.

Some people are buying a portable unit that transmits to an FM reciever, and your deck might work fine for this setup.

I always liked Cerwin Vega speakers for the price, but just about any big name brand has good speakers

Re: Choice of Radio Replacement and Speakers

My favorite brands are,Alpine,Kicker,Rockford Fosgate. No matter what you get though it will sound better than what you got now.I would reconmend that you go on ebay and look. You will save alot of cash.Don't forget you will need a mount kit and wire harness.Does anybody remember if he needs a radio anteena adapter?I can't remember if the older ones needed them.

My suggestion is to go to Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) Prices are higher than e-bay, but you get all the mounting brackets, antenna adapters, speaker adapters etc. Great for a first timer / fastest install.

Radio shack told me that I needed the antena adapter for my 85, but I tried it without and it works perfectly.

Use the Crutchfield site for info only, like speaker size for example. Then go shopping on ebay or another site.Compare prices.Crutchfield is way to expensive!

The older model vechicles have a large antenna ends, newer model vechicles have small antenna ends.Aftermarket stereos have a large antenna socket which causes no problems with older vechicles. Now for newer vechicles with the small antenna end you need an adapter so that the large antenna socket will step down to the small antenna end.So Overboard you answered this question.I hate when Radioshack people don't know what their talking about.

Re: Choice of Radio Replacement and Speakers

You gotta tell us on what you decide, and if the instal looks good show us the pictures.

And I see that the audio section of the new FAQ section is still blank.
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=496966
it isn't transfered over to the S10 board yet.

If you have a camara and feel like making a how to on this topic it might be a good time, and would help others in the future
